Dimensions: Length 11.5 cm (4.53 in / 0.38 ft); Width 10.8 cm (4.25 in / 0.35 ft); Late Neolithic Period, 5th–3rd Millennium BCE,Weight: 139 grams (4.90 oz),Condition & Provenance: The jade bi is preserved intact overall, with no apparent major breaks or restoration. The stone has undergone extensive calcification, resulting in a predominantly chicken-bone white surface enriched by warm cream-yellow, gray-brown, and gray-white areas of coloration. Fine hairline and network-like weathering fissures extend across the body, creating a richly layered and naturally aged appearance. The object is fashioned in a distinctive rounded-square bi form with a large circular central aperture. The interior wall of the aperture retains visible rotational and abrasive-working traces, while a smaller suspension perforation near the upper edge provides an additional means of attachment. The inner and outer contours have been extensively ground and polished, producing softly rounded corners and smooth transitions without sharp edges. The surface retains a substantial matte-to-waxy patina with pronounced variations in texture and coloration. Provenance: Private Collection, Switzerland. Acquired in 1994 and retained in the same collection for approximately thirty-two years. According to the collection history, the piece previously circulated through the European art trade, including dealers in France and Germany, before entering the Swiss collection in the mid-1990s.Description: This substantial jade bi is fashioned from a single piece of stone into a broad, rounded-square form centered by a large circular aperture. At 11.5 cm in length and weighing 139 grams, the object has considerable physical presence, yet its design remains remarkably restrained. Its visual impact comes primarily from proportion, negative space, surface character, and the contrast between the softly squared exterior and perfectly legible circular opening. The stone presents an extensive chicken-bone white appearance, layered with warm cream-yellow, gray-brown, and pale gray areas. Fine fissures and weathered textures extend throughout the surface, producing considerable tonal depth. Rather than employing elaborate carved ornament, the maker allowed the material, silhouette, and polished planes to define the aesthetic character of the object. The most distinctive feature is its rounded-square profile. Unlike the perfectly circular bi discs familiar from later periods of Chinese art, this form places a circular aperture within a softly squared body with gently rounded corners. The resulting contrast between circle and square gives the object an unusually strong geometric presence. The central aperture was carefully drilled and ground, with subtle rotational and abrasive-working traces remaining along the interior wall. A smaller perforation near the upper edge would have permitted the object to be suspended or incorporated into a larger arrangement. Its placement suggests that the piece was intended not merely as a static object but also for ceremonial display, suspension, or personal attachment. The exterior perimeter, central opening, and corners have all been repeatedly worked with abrasives until the transitions became smooth and rounded. This extensive finishing is particularly impressive given the hardness of jade and the time required to cut, drill, grind, and polish such a large object using prehistoric lapidary technology. Jade bi and related perforated plaques occupy an important position within prehistoric Chinese material culture. Archaeological discoveries demonstrate that perforated jade forms could participate in personal ornament, ceremonial assemblages, and elite burial practices. Traditional interpretations have also associated the circle with heaven and the square with earth, although such cosmological readings are more securely documented in later Chinese thought and should be applied cautiously to Neolithic objects. Even without assigning a specific symbolic interpretation, the deliberate juxtaposition of a circular opening and squared exterior clearly demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of abstract geometry and visual balance. Particularly compelling in this example is the relationship between its substantial scale and minimalist design. The broad body gives the object monumentality, while the large central aperture prevents it from appearing visually heavy. The rounded corners soften the geometry, and the varied chicken-bone white, cream, and earthy surface tones introduce an organic counterpoint to the disciplined form. With its impressive 11.5 cm scale, 139-gram weight, distinctive rounded-square silhouette, large central aperture, suspension perforation, extensively polished contours, and richly varied chicken-bone white surface, this jade bi represents a visually commanding example of prehistoric Chinese hardstone design and would make a significant study piece within a collection devoted to Hongshan material culture and early Chinese ritual jade.
