The silk has developed a natural aged tone, while the ink remains strong and clearly visible. The title label, Wen Zhengming’s frontispiece, the Zhao Wenmin calligraphy section, later inscriptions, and numerous collector seals are all preserved, showing a long history of imperial and private appreciation. Provenance: Private Collection, Georgia, USA,Description: This work is a complete traditional Chinese calligraphy handscroll following the classic mounting sequence of title label, frontispiece, main calligraphy, separators, and historical colophons. The entire mounting system is carefully preserved with multiple layers of woven silk, representing the refined presentation style of important Chinese scholar artworks. The opening section features an antique paper title label inscribed with “Imperial Collection — Authentic Handscroll of Zhao Wenmin’s Running Script,” with a signature and seal by Yu Zhiding. The label provides important information regarding the identity and collecting history of the work, following the traditional format used for significant Chinese handscrolls. Following the title label is a gold-flecked silk frontispiece in a warm ochre tone. The large running-script inscription “Elegant and Unrestrained Spirit” was written by Wen Zhengming, praising the graceful and refined qualities associated with Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy. The frontispiece features rich ink expression and a palace-style presentation with a red seal above. The main section is executed on aged silk and is traditionally attributed to Zhao Mengfu, one of the greatest calligraphers of the Yuan dynasty. The handscroll presents multiple poems and literary texts in Zhao’s celebrated running-script style, characterized by smooth brush movement, balanced structure, elegant rhythm, and sophisticated variations of ink tone. Numerous imperial and private collector seals appear throughout the composition, recording centuries of appreciation and ownership history. The aged silk surface displays a refined antique character while maintaining clear and expressive calligraphic lines. The trailing section contains multiple historical colophons on different types of antique papers, separated by colorful silk panels. These inscriptions include scholarly comments, authentication notes, and reflections by later collectors. The variety of papers, signatures, and seals adds significant historical and documentary value to the handscroll. The materials include antique silk for the frontispiece and main calligraphy, antique papers for labels and colophons, and multicolored woven silk separators. The complete format follows the traditional Chinese handscroll structure: title label → gold-flecked silk frontispiece → silk calligraphy section → multiple historical colophons. Zhao Mengfu, known as Zhao Wenmin, was one of the most influential masters of Yuan dynasty calligraphy, and his elegant running-script works have long been admired by imperial courts and collectors. The entire silk, paper, and mounting structure remains complete, with clear calligraphy, abundant seals, and a well-preserved historical presentation.
