Dimensions (cm/inches | Century: 18th Century): Height 15 cm (5.91 in), Maximum Rim Diameter 12 cm (4.72 in),Condition & Provenance: Preserved in outstanding original condition with no cracks, hairlines, chips, repairs, or restoration. The simulated wood-grain glaze remains exceptionally vibrant, while the iron-red decoration, ink-painted landscapes, and gilt details are beautifully preserved. The integrated one-piece construction is structurally sound, and the iron-red four-character reign mark reading “Yongzheng Nianzhi” on the base is clear and well executed. From the long-held private collection of an established Chinese porcelain collector in Texas, USA.Description: This exceptional Yongzheng imperial brush holder is a remarkable example of the Qing court's mastery of trompe-l'?il ceramic decoration, combining faux wood-grain glazing, finely painted landscape panels, and an innovative sculptural form into a single masterpiece. Designed as a one-piece begonia-shaped brush holder with an integrated base, the vessel reflects the refined elegance and technical sophistication that define the finest porcelains produced during the Yongzheng reign. The upper section is formed as a four-lobed begonia blossom with softly curving contours and a delicately gilded pearl-pattern border around the rim. The interior is covered in a warm ivory glaze that has developed a gentle, natural surface character through age, enhancing its appeal as a refined scholar's object. The exterior is entirely finished in an extraordinarily convincing faux wood-grain glaze that faithfully reproduces the appearance of richly figured hardwood. Layers of warm brown tones, simulated growth rings, and natural wood knots are rendered with exceptional realism, demonstrating the remarkable technical achievements of the Yongzheng imperial kilns in reproducing natural materials through porcelain. Four rectangular reserve panels outlined in fine gilt lines interrupt the wood-grain surface. Two are painted in iron-red enamels with elegant southern landscapes featuring ancient pines, dramatic rock formations, waterside pavilions, fishing boats, distant mountains, and birds in flight, all arranged with a sophisticated sense of depth and atmosphere. The remaining two panels are executed in monochrome ink enamels, depicting rugged mountain scenery, secluded cottages, and wooded landscapes inspired by the traditions of classical Chinese literati painting. The harmonious contrast between the warm iron-red landscapes and the restrained monochrome compositions creates a refined visual rhythm that perfectly reflects the artistic ideals of the Yongzheng court. The integrated lower pedestal is finished in a rich coral-red glaze highlighted with finely painted gilt cloud scrolls and geometric borders. Rectangular openings on both sides add both visual interest and architectural balance, while the brilliant coral-red base provides a striking contrast to the understated faux wood-grain decoration above. The underside bears a finely written four-character iron-red seal mark reading “Yongzheng Nianzhi,” executed in the elegant style associated with imperial porcelains of the period. Combining innovative ceramic technology, sophisticated painted decoration, and an exceptionally rare integrated form, this brush holder represents one of the most imaginative expressions of Yongzheng imperial porcelain. Examples of this quality are seldom encountered, and its remarkable state of preservation, artistic refinement, and technical accomplishment make it an outstanding work of Qing court ceramic art with exceptional appeal to collectors, museums, and scholars.
