拍品描述 翻译
Dimensions: 39 cm (approx. 15.35 inches); Yuan Dynasty, 13th-14th century. Condition and Provenance: Well-preserved, with a flared mouth, short neck, broad shoulders, and rounded body. It features a pair of animal-face handles and a thick base. The cobalt blue decoration is clearly visible, with a natural transition in the cobalt blue pigment, from a soft grayish-blue to saturated indigo and deep blue, showing some localized smudging and higher pigment concentration. The glaze is smooth, with slight wear, minor stains, and signs of aging consistent with long-term display and handling. The animal-face handles are sharply defined, with some raised areas showing natural wear. The broad, unglazed sandy base reveals traces of trimming, kiln marks, old soil deposits, stains, and wear from long-term contact. This piece comes from a private collection in New York, USA, and was formerly owned by an overseas family. This large blue-and-white jar, 39 cm tall, showcases the visual impact of Yuan Dynasty ceramics with its imposing presence and richly layered decoration. The jar has a wide, flared body, a short, thick neck, and full, rounded shoulders. The body is deep and gradually narrows to a broad, stable base. Its silhouette is powerful and architecturally inspired, with the visual focus concentrated on the shoulders and upper body. Animal-face handles adorn the shoulders, giving the jar a sculptural, three-dimensional feel, distinguishing it from purely painted vessels. Decorative patterns extend from the mouth to the base, layering and intricately arranged. The mouth is decorated with continuous scrolling patterns, while the neck features wave patterns outlined by repeating curves. These waves lend the jar a sense of movement and cleverly connect the mouth to the broad shoulders below, creating a decorative transition. The interior features multiple compartments separated by striking cobalt blue vertical lines. These decorative panels radiate naturally outwards, following the angle of the shoulders, emphasizing the broad upper profile of the vessel. Following this is a dense band of scrolling floral patterns that encircles the body. Large, peony-like flowers are interspersed with curling stems and leaves. The flowers are full and layered, while vines meander and coil along the shoulders, giving the decoration a rich yet rhythmic feel. Animal masks on either side break the tranquility of the floral scene, cleverly combining two-dimensional painting with three-dimensional modeling. The protruding eyes, noses, and facial details of the masks are enhanced with cobalt blue glaze, which naturally converges in the recesses of the surface, making the masks more three-dimensional. The main body of the jar bears the most important motif: two qilin (mythical creatures) weave through lush vines and flowers, forming a complete picture. These two mythical beasts stand tall with their heads held high, long limbs, ferocious scales, flowing manes, and powerful, agile tails. Their bodies are covered with meticulously repeated scale patterns, while their heads, horns, necks, and legs are outlined with bolder lines. The most captivating aspect of this painting is that the animals are not isolated within a single frame, but rather cleverly integrated into the floral environment. Lotus and peony-like blossoms bloom among them, with coiled stems winding and twisting around them. Leaves face in different directions, buds dot the larger flowers, and tiny tendrils fill the blank spaces without completely obscuring the white background. The final image is rich and full, yet avoids any sense of mechanical repetition. As the pottery jar rotates, the scene unfolds, as if a qilin (a mythical creature) is weaving through an endless garden. The cobalt blue pigment exhibits a rich variation in tone. Scales, mane, veins, and tiny tendrils are depicted with fine lines, while flowers, leaves, and certain parts of the animal are rendered with thicker washes. In some areas, the pigment is deep and rich, while in others it transitions softly to a lighter grayish-blue. The slight, natural blending softens some of the outlines, while the deep shades of cobalt blue create a deeper visual effect, adding depth to the image. This color variation is particularly effective on the qilin's scale-like body and the large floral patterns, where varying shades of blue subtly delineate different forms. Below the main flora and fauna motifs, a narrow, continuous band of scrolling foliage forms a smooth horizontal transition with the lower body. The foot is divided into a series of slender, petal-shaped decorations, each adorned with ruyi cloud patterns or pendants, and decorated with small circular patterns below. The strong vertical lines of these lower decorations visually stabilize the gradually narrowing shape and echo the segmented decorations on the shoulder. This vertical harmony gives the entire decorative pattern a carefully designed sense of architectural order. The glaze presents a soft blue-white tone, providing a good backdrop for the rich cobalt blue. Viewed from above, the wide mouth and short neck emphasize the heaviness of the jar, while the wave patterns surrounding the mouth and the shoulder decorations give it a strong sense of movement. The interior of the jar is glazed, and the mouth and neck show the natural texture formed by long-term use and preservation. The bottom of the jar is largely exposed, revealing a thick, light beige to gray earthenware body. The polished bottom shows traces of trimming, kiln marks, old stains, soil deposits, and wear marks. The rugged base contrasts sharply with the smooth, glazed body of the jar. The Qilin, one of the most enduring auspicious animals in Chinese art, traditionally symbolizes benevolent governance, peace, good fortune, and prosperity. The Qilin, depicted amidst lush vines, further imbues the piece with a sense of vitality, wealth, and good luck. The wave and treasure motifs on the upper part of the jar add another layer of auspicious meaning, transforming the decoration from mere surface embellishment into a unified symbolic system. From the perspective of an American collector, this ceramic jar is of exceptional aesthetic value. From a distance, the viewer is first struck by its rounded, full contours, the paired protruding masks, and the striking blue-and-white color scheme. Upon closer inspection, the details become increasingly clear: the Qilin's scales, curly mane, petals, curled leaves, wave patterns, precious designs, and lower decorations all deserve careful appreciation. The well-fitting handle lends the pottery jar a sculptural quality, while the continuous pattern of qilin and flowers forms a narrative element, changing the imagery as the jar is rotated. Its large size, intricate decorations, mythical animal figures, and three-dimensional shoulder ornamentation make this pottery jar a striking focal point in Chinese ceramics collecting.
