拍品描述 翻译
Dimensions: 41 cm (approx. 16.14 inches) high; Yuan Dynasty, 13th-14th century. Condition and Provenance: The original lid is well-preserved, and the body is generally well-preserved, with the mouth, short neck, broad shoulders, tapering body, and foot all intact. The underglaze blue dragon and cloud patterns and auspicious motifs on the lid are clearly visible. The cobalt blue glaze transitions naturally, from a soft grayish-blue to a saturated indigo, with deeper shades in areas of higher pigment concentration. Diffusion and tonal variations from the firing process are visible in some areas. The glaze is smooth and soft, with only minor wear, slight stains, and signs of long-term handling and display. The broad, unglazed sandy base shows obvious circular trimming marks, old soil deposits, stains, and natural wear. This piece comes from a private collection in Washington State, USA, and was formerly owned by an overseas family. This large Yuan Dynasty covered plum vase, 41 cm high, has a classic shape with high shoulders, perfectly blending with one of the most imposing themes in Chinese decorative arts—the dragon motif. The bottle has a small mouth, a short neck, broad and full shoulders, and a slender body that gradually tapers downwards. The overall shape is upright and powerful, rather than bulky and cumbersome. The original lid further enhances the piece's complete and architectural visual effect. The lid is adorned with a small, pointed, gem-shaped knob, visually extending the bottle and making the overall shape appear more vertical and upright. The lid is decorated with auspicious patterns in cobalt blue against a light glaze. These patterns include stylized depictions of precious objects and symbols of good fortune, protection, and auspicious omens. The patterns are arranged compactly and orderly, setting a dignified tone for the free-flowing dragon motif on the lower body of the bottle. The main body of the bottle depicts a giant dragon weaving through clouds. The artist did not place the dragon within a fixed frame, but allowed it to roam freely on the curved surface of the vase. The dragon's head is raised high, lifelike, with piercing eyes, an extended snout, backward-curving horns, flowing whiskers, and a mane drawn with vibrant, long lines. The dragon's body meanders and coils in the painting, its scales depicted in meticulously repeated patterns, giving it a heavy, armor-like texture. Cobalt blue outlines delineate the dragon's spine and key turning points, remaining clearly discernible even as it coils around the bottle. Its sharp, outstretched claws abruptly reach towards the surrounding scenery, creating a powerful visual impact. The dragon's tail and rear encircle the bottle, gradually revealing its full form as it rotates. This is a crucial element of the visual experience: the composition employs a circular design, rather than focusing on a single, fixed front. Clouds surround the dragon in various forms. Some clouds are compact and rounded, others extend outwards like long ribbons, and still others resemble wisps of light, drifting smoke. The heavier cloud heads are painted in deep cobalt blue, while lighter lines are used to depict more delicate details. This technique imbues the background with dynamism and helps create a realistic effect of the dragon traversing a vibrant sky. The cobalt blue itself is a major highlight of this painting. Fine lines outline the scales, whiskers, claws, and smaller cloud details, while heavier brushstrokes define the dragon's main silhouette and the shapes of some clouds. The blue transitions from a soft grayish-blue to a rich indigo, deepening in areas where the pigment is concentrated. Slight, natural smudging around some of the heavier brushstrokes softens the edges, giving the painting a lively, hand-painted feel. Against a backdrop of soft blue and white glaze, a strong yet balanced blue-white contrast is achieved. The artist skillfully uses negative space. Large areas of light-colored glaze around the dragon and clouds are clearly visible, making the dragon easily identifiable even from the other side of the room. This more open composition lends the work a sense of space and dynamism, rather than the dense arrangement often found on large ceramic jars. The form and decoration complement each other: the dragon's long, curved lines, full shoulders, and gradually narrowing body make the image a seamless integration with the vessel, rather than a simple addition.
