Dimensions: Mouth diameter 21.7 cm (8.54 inches), body 17 cm (6.69 inches), total height including original hardwood base 21.2 cm (8.35 inches), Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). Condition and Provenance: This porcelain jar is intact, without any minor cracks, hidden fissures, or missing pieces. The glaze on the rim is well preserved. The cobalt blue glaze is bright and full, with distinct layers; the painted details, such as the floral, bird, and rock patterns, are clear and sharp, with no obvious surface wear. The naturally formed spiral patterns inside the jar are original traces of Ming Dynasty porcelain. The unglazed base exposes solid, dry clay, with visible spiral tool marks, without any signs of polishing or acid washing. The matching carved old hardwood base is sturdy and intact, with undamaged carvings, perfectly matching the porcelain jar. This blue-and-white scroll jar was once in the collection of a literati in southern China, and entered the overseas market in the 1980s. It is now in the possession of a private collector of Ming and Qing porcelain in Texas, USA. California, New York, and Texas were important global trading centers for Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain. Description: This large blue-and-white scroll-shaped jar, dating back to the late Chongzhen period of the Ming dynasty, was an exquisite study utensil for the upper class, used to store scrolls of calligraphy and painting, and also served as an interior decoration. The jar has a straight mouth, a deep body that gradually narrows downwards, and a symmetrical overall shape. Two thin, concentric blue lines adorn the rim. The entire body is decorated with a vivid landscape and bird-and-flower scene in underglaze blue: rugged scholar rocks, blooming peonies, blossoming lotuses, birds perched on branches, as well as sun motifs and a densely dotted background. The composition of this porcelain piece is dense yet ingeniously arranged, with excellent visual rhythm. It employs the free and unrestrained brushwork of the late Ming literati painting tradition, with cobalt blue pigment creating rich layers that contrast sharply with the white porcelain background. The ink-like variations in shade outline the three-dimensionality and shadows of the rocks, petals, and bird feathers, bringing the entire piece to life. Spiral throwing marks are visible inside the jar, a typical characteristic of large-scale porcelain from late Ming dynasty folk kilns. The flat, unglazed base, with its finely incised spiral patterns on solid, light-colored clay, strongly suggests its age. Chongzhen blue-and-white porcelain is renowned for its vivid flower-and-bird paintings. This scroll-patterned jar is entirely painted, with a rich and vibrant cobalt blue hue, and is remarkably well-preserved. It also comes with a contemporary hardwood base, a rarity among extant pieces of this type. This porcelain showcases the superb painting techniques of late Ming dynasty Jingdezhen ceramics, reflecting the refined aesthetics of the literati of the time. Highly regarded by North American collectors of Ming and Qing dynasty porcelain, it is a highly collectible masterpiece of blue-and-white porcelain.
