Dimensions: 16.5 cm (6.50 in) in diameter, 10 cm (3.94 in) in height. Early to Middle Neolithic (4th millennium BCE to early 2nd millennium BCE). Condition and Provenance: This ceramic bowl is in excellent condition, without minor cracks, major damage, or signs of repair. Only a few natural excavation marks are present on the rim. It has not undergone modern polishing, repainting, or acid treatment to artificially age it. The bowl is made of dense red clay, covered with a thick layer of original burial soil. The red and black geometric painted patterns are clearly visible, with some fading of the pigments entirely due to millennia of burial. The hand-finishing marks on the bottom are authentic evidence of the original craftsmanship. The soil rust and aged patina are all from its original burial state, untouched by modern alterations. This piece was passed down from a local collector in Northwest China to an antique gallery in Hong Kong decades ago, and was acquired in 2016 by a private collector in Florida, USA, specializing in prehistoric pottery. Hong Kong, Florida, and Vancouver are major global trading centers for Neolithic Chinese painted pottery. Description: This waist-shaped painted pottery bowl from the Majiayao culture, decorated with geometric patterns, is a classic everyday storage vessel of Neolithic tribes living in the Gansu-Qinghai region of the upper Yellow River. It could also have been used as a small sacrificial offering and is a typical representative artifact of the Majiayao culture. It has a wide mouth, a narrow neck, a sloping body, and a shallow, flat bottom. The overall shape is full and sturdy, with well-proportioned features, making it a classic example of Majiayao painted pottery bowls. The outer rim is decorated with multiple layers of orderly painted patterns, separated by horizontal fine lines and supplemented by vertical short lines and square geometric combinations. The bold and powerful hand-painted lines are neatly arranged, fully demonstrating the primitive planar painting language of the ancient people. The abstract lines on the pottery symbolize mountains, rivers, farmland, the sun, moon, and stars, carrying the totemistic connotations of the ancient tribes' worship of nature and agricultural civilization. This piece was handcrafted using the ancient coil-building technique, slightly polished, and then hand-painted with natural mineral pigments such as hematite and manganese oxide before being fired in a low-temperature wood-fired kiln. The pigment layers are tightly bonded to the red pottery body, with only the surface pigments fading naturally due to long-term erosion by groundwater and soil. The flat bottom retains the original hand-cut marks, providing important material evidence for the study of Neolithic pottery making techniques, prehistoric mineral painting systems, and primitive agricultural civilization tribes in Northwest China. Well-preserved Majiayao painted pottery with its original burial patina is extremely rare in the world antique market. This waisted pottery bowl has complete decorations, no serious damage to the body, and retains the original patina from its excavation. It has extremely high archaeological research value and prehistoric art collection value, and is highly sought after by prehistoric artifact collectors in North America and small private art museums overseas. It is a high-quality core item in the collection of ancient painted pottery.
