Dimensions: 29.5 cm (11.61 inches) in height, 13 cm (5.12 inches) in base width, Yuan Dynasty, 13th-14th century. Condition and Provenance: This Yuan Dynasty porcelain statue was cast in one piece using a mold-casting technique and hand-carved. The body is made of coarse reddish-brown clay and glazed with a pale blue glaze. The glaze exhibits natural crackle patterns and an irregular, natural burial patina, without any signs of modern artificial dyeing or aging. The finely crafted crown, flowing ribbons, and pearl necklace are all well-preserved. The statues of Suddhodana and the Dragon Girl on either side are also undamaged, and the holy water bottle at Guanyin's feet is intact. Some glaze has slightly worn off due to long-term burial underground; however, the main body of the statue has no through cracks, damage, or signs of glue. The original hollow perforation on the tree stump base remains intact. The interior of the hollow base exposes dry, aged clay, showing no signs of repair or later reglazing. This sculpture was unearthed from a Yuan Dynasty kiln site near Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, and was exported overseas in the 1990s. It is now in the collection of a Florida collector specializing in ancient porcelain Buddhist statues. Major global trading centers for ancient porcelain Buddhist statues are California and Bangkok. Description: This Yuan Dynasty Hutian kiln celadon-glazed Guanyin statue is considered a top-tier example of ancient Buddhist ceramic art from Jingdezhen. It was made using techniques such as segmented molding, hand-applied decoration, and clay kneading. It depicts a popular folk religious theme—the relaxed expression of the Guanyin, flanked by the God of Wealth and a dragon maiden, a classic Buddhist theme from the Song and Yuan dynasties. The Guanyin sits serenely on a hollow tree stump-shaped base, her posture relaxed and graceful, her face gentle and serene, with full and rounded facial features, reflecting the gentle and realistic aesthetics of Yuan Dynasty figure painting. The intricately carved crown is adorned with layers of cloud and ruyi patterns; long ribbons encircle the entire body, and layered pearl necklaces create a vivid three-dimensional effect, complementing the smooth and natural folds of the robe. King Suddhodana and the Dragon Girl stand respectfully on either side of Guanyin Bodhisattva, their hands clasped in prayer. At Guanyin Bodhisattva's feet rests a delicately crafted holy water bottle. The entire statue is glazed with the pale, lustrous celadon glaze characteristic of the Hutian kiln, presenting a soft blue-white tone. The junction between the body and glaze naturally forms uneven layers of soil, along with fine crackles formed over hundreds of years underground. This Jingdezhen Guanyin statue features a hollow tree stump base and a hollow interior, conforming to the standard high-temperature firing techniques for large-scale porcelain sculptures of the Yuan Dynasty. Such well-preserved Yuan Dynasty Jingdezhen Guanyin statues, complete with a pair of attendants, are extremely rare in the antique market. Such large, standing porcelain sculptures faced extremely high risks during firing, including kiln cracking and damage to accessories. This piece, with its main body, attendants, and ritual objects all intact, is an important physical specimen for studying Yuan Dynasty Jingdezhen porcelain sculpture techniques and ancient folk religious culture. It is not only an ideal exhibit for Buddhist art exhibitions in ancient ceramics museums but also a core treasure for overseas collectors building their collections of ancient Chinese porcelain.
