Dimensions: Height 118 cm (46.46 inches), Width 90 cm (35.43 inches), Depth 50 cm (19.69 inches). An 18th-19th century Qing Dynasty huanghuali multi-drawer bookcase. Condition and Provenance: This bookcase is crafted entirely from solid huanghuali wood, with complete mortise and tenon joints and no filler wood. The wood grain is fine, resembling silver hair, with a rich, deep amber-brown color and a thick, semi-transparent, naturally aged patina. The front of the bookcase features a tiered storage design: two narrow drawers side-by-side at the top, and four long drawers running the length of the bookcase below, providing a total of five storage spaces. Each drawer retains its original brass handles, carved with auspicious cloud patterns, and the metal parts exhibit a soft, natural patina, showing no signs of later replacement or alteration. The edges of the bookcase are decorated with raised classical lines and recessed corner ornaments. The back panel uses a four-section frame inlay technique, and the base has low, inwardly curved horseshoe-shaped feet. The entire frame structure is sturdy and stable, with no loose joints, cracked wood, insect infestation, fissures, or signs of repair or replacement. The surface bears the soft marks of two centuries of use, the original antique lacquer intact and undamaged, without any sanding, refurbishment, recoloring, or artificial aging. All natural wood grain details are perfectly preserved. This huanghuali scholar's cabinet was originally consigned for auction by an Asian antique gallery in Vancouver and entered the private collection of a New York-based Qing dynasty hardwood furniture dealer in 2026. New York, Vancouver, and Toronto are major global trading centers for Chinese antique hardwood furniture and other art. Description: A five-drawer huanghuali bookcase from the Qing dynasty is a classic and practical piece of hardwood furniture from the ancient Chinese scholar's study, used to store scroll paintings, jade seals, inkstones, and small artifacts. A five-drawer bookcase in such excellent condition, with all bronze hardware untouched by refurbishment or structural repair, is extremely rare worldwide and highly sought after by antique furniture collectors globally. The entire bookcase uses traditional mortise and tenon joints without any metal nails, making its structure sturdy and durable, remaining resistant to warping or loosening even after more than two centuries. Its tiered front drawer design is ingenious, fully considering the storage needs of scholars: the two narrow drawers at the top can store small cultural relics such as seals, jade carvings, and inkstones; the four wide drawers at the bottom provide ample storage space for scrolls, rubbings of inscriptions, ancient books, and desktop ornaments. The uniform bronze handles with auspicious cloud patterns, in a simple antique style, combine practicality with classical Chinese aesthetics, creating a striking visual contrast between the warm hardwood and the cool bronze metal. The sharply defined, raised contours outline every edge of the cabinet, softening the heavy lines and adding a touch of refined elegance. The four framed back panels follow the standard structure of hardwood furniture from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty. The low, horseshoe-shaped base not only provides stable support but also promotes air circulation at the bottom of the cabinet, preventing the wood from getting damp. The cabinet surface is made of genuine Hainan rosewood, with a dense and flowing grain, resembling cow hair, adorned with the signature silver-gray speckles; the natural grain variations give it a rustic texture. Qing Dynasty literati and scholars favored huanghuali wood, drawn to its gentle and delicate natural grain, which perfectly complemented the understated and minimalist design of their furniture. This multi-drawer storage cabinet combines practicality with understated elegance, making it an ideal choice for a traditional study. It possesses multiple collectible values, including the rarity of high-quality huanghuali wood, its unaltered original condition, exquisite classical mortise and tenon craftsmanship, and profound literati cultural significance. It has long been favored by antique hardwood collectors in North America, Canada, and Southeast Asia, offering reliable long-term asset appreciation potential.
