拍品描述 翻译
Dimensions: Overall height 51 cm (20.08 inches), top width 26 cm (10.24 inches), weight 13.7 kg. Liao Dynasty (10th-12th century) bronze Buddhist ritual implement. Condition and Provenance: This shrine was cast from multiple parts and then assembled into a single unit. The roof is intact, and it features two movable protective doors and a double-layered trapezoidal base. There is no obvious damage or extensive repair welds. The mortise and tenon hinges on the doors are still functional and open and close smoothly. The entire bronze surface is covered with a thick, naturally formed peacock green patina, organically interspersed with reddish-brown clay crusts, without any artificial chemical treatment or modern rough polishing. The high-relief guardian deities on the doors, the bodhisattva image on the back, the Buddha preaching relief in the center of the shrine, and the vajra and group of devotees on the base are clearly defined, with no severe wear or blurring. The original, untreated clay patina is completely preserved in the recesses of the base. This Liao Dynasty bronze Buddhist shrine was acquired in 2016 by a private Buddhist art collection in Los Angeles, California, a major global trading center for ancient Chinese bronzes. Description: This well-preserved Liao Dynasty bronze pavilion-style shrine, featuring double-hinged doors, is a museum-quality masterpiece of Liaobei Buddhist bronze art. It blends traditional Chinese temple architectural aesthetics with the Buddhist beliefs of the Khitan royal family, serving as important material evidence of the cultural fusion between the Han and Khitan peoples during the Liao Dynasty. The shrine consists of three distinct structural layers. The uppermost layer faithfully reproduces the traditional Chinese sloping roof of a temple, with clearly visible ridge tiles, upturned eaves, and a central pearl decoration, capturing the architectural details of a medieval Chinese temple with hyper-realistic casting techniques. The middle layer features two inward-opening hinged protective doors, each adorned with high-relief celestial guardian warriors clad in full, segmented armor, holding ritual implements, their faces dignified, the armor textures clearly defined, and the flowing folds of their robes creating a striking three-dimensional effect. When the two doors open inward, a beautifully crafted relief of Shakyamuni Buddha seated on a lotus throne, preaching the Dharma, is revealed in the central niche, flanked by attendants, disciples, and celestial maidens. The inner side of each door is lined with neatly arranged miniature Buddha statues, creating a magnificent cosmic scene with Buddhas surrounding the central sacred site. The back of the doors is also decorated with a thousand Buddha statues surrounding the central sacred site. The main body of the niche is carved with a beautifully crafted image of Guanyin Bodhisattva, whose flowing shawl and smooth lines showcase the exquisite metal carving techniques of the Liao Dynasty. The double-layered trapezoidal base is decorated with segmented high-relief sculptures, including muscular Vajra guardian deities, devout kneeling believers, and guardian beasts, arranged in a balanced manner to form a vivid and continuous religious narrative. The niche employs a segmented bronze casting technique, with the roof, door panels, central niche, and base cast separately and then connected by precise mortise and tenon joints. This ingenious engineering design balances religious function with exquisite sculptural expression. Buddhism flourished in the Liao-Khitan region, and many noble families commissioned the construction of large bronze Buddhist shrines for ancestral worship. Such complete, large bronze shrines with pavilion-style designs and hinged doors are extremely rare; those well-preserved, untouched by modern cleaning or restoration, and retaining their original regional patina are even rarer. This shrine is magnificent, imposing, and exquisitely cast. Its layered imagery is remarkably well-preserved, seamlessly integrating architectural sculpture, deep relief, fine line carving, and superb bronze casting techniques, perfectly showcasing the religious traditions and artistic tastes of northern Liao Dynasty China. This top-tier artifact is highly sought after by international Asian art museums and Buddhist sculpture collectors worldwide, possessing extremely high religious, historical, artistic, academic, and collectible value.
