拍品描述 翻译
Dimensions 48.5 cm (approximately 19.09 in); Xuande Period, 15th centuryCondition and Provenance in well-preserved condition, retaining its complete straight mouth, short neck, broad shoulders, full rounded body, and substantial base. The blue-and-white decoration remains strongly defined, with cobalt ranging from rich indigo to deep blue-black in areas of heavier pigment concentration, together with natural variations and localized diffusion from firing. The glaze has a mellow, well-preserved surface with minor wear, light staining, and traces consistent with long-term handling and display. The decorative registers around the neck, shoulder, body, and lower section remain clearly legible. The broad unglazed sanded base shows substantial potting and trimming marks, old earthen deposits, staining, and natural contact wear accumulated over time. From a private collection in California, United States, with a history of family ownership overseas.Description monumental 48.5 cm blue-and-white jar has the scale, physical authority, and dramatic imagery associated with major early Ming display ceramics. The vessel is strongly proportioned, with a straight mouth, short upright neck, broad swelling shoulders, a massive rounded body, and a lower section that gradually contracts toward a wide stable base. Its silhouette is immediately commanding. The generous shoulders carry much of the visual weight, while the narrowing lower body keeps the form from appearing static or overly heavy. The principal decoration is an expansive dragon-and-cloud composition that wraps around the body as a continuous scene. A powerful dragon dominates the central field, its long scaled body twisting dynamically through bands of cloud. The head is raised and animated, with large staring eyes, an extended muzzle, sweeping horns, flowing whiskers, and a mane rendered in repeated linear strokes. The face has an almost theatrical intensity, while the open posture of the body gives the animal tremendous movement across the curved surface of the jar. Each scale is articulated with tightly repeated curved lines, producing a dense armored texture across the dragon’s body. The claws extend sharply outward, creating points of tension against the surrounding open ground, while the tail and lower body sweep through the composition in broad curves. The dragon is surrounded by scrolling clouds of several different types. Some are compact, tightly curled cloud heads built from deep cobalt; others stretch outward in long ribbon-like formations. This variation is important because it keeps the background from becoming repetitive. The clouds seem to move with the animal, reinforcing the impression that the dragon is actively surging through the sky rather than simply occupying a decorative field. Across the shoulder are additional mask-like or auspicious roundels framed by tightly curled spiral forms. Seen from above, these motifs form a loose ring around the vessel’s opening and provide a secondary decorative scale against the much larger dragon below. Their prominent eyes, curling facial elements, and surrounding spirals give the shoulder a strongly animated character. The short neck is encircled by a continuous band of stylized clouds, creating a clean decorative boundary beneath the rim. This more compact neck ornament serves as an effective visual counterpoint to the much freer composition on the body. The entire jar is structured through a carefully controlled balance between concentrated cobalt and open white ground. The main dragon is large, but it is given enough surrounding space to remain legible from a distance.
