Dimensions: Height 29 cm (approximately 11.42 in); Ming Dynasty, 14th–17th centuryCondition and Provenance: Overall in well-preserved condition, with the mouth, neck, shoulder, and body remaining intact and without apparent major losses. The glaze retains a naturally aged surface with light wear consistent with long-term handling and display. The cobalt-blue decoration remains clearly visible. The unglazed foot and base show natural potting and finishing marks, old surface discoloration, and age-related wear. From a private collection in Texas, United States, reportedly preserved within the same family for generations.Description: This blue-and-white meiping is defined by the strong, full-bodied proportions traditionally associated with the classic Chinese meiping form. The vessel rises from a broad unglazed base through gently tapering lower walls to a generously rounded body and high, powerful shoulders, finishing in a short constricted neck and a thick, rounded mouth. The silhouette has substantial visual weight, yet the continuous transition from the broad shoulder to the narrowing lower body gives the vessel a balanced and carefully controlled profile. Around the shoulder is a dense cobalt-blue diaper-ground border composed of interlocking geometric bands, lozenge-shaped elements, and stylized floral reserves. The repeated design creates a highly decorative architectural band around the upper body. Richly painted areas of cobalt alternate with reserved white passages, producing a crisp graphic contrast and establishing a formal decorative frame above the more freely painted principal scene. The main body is painted with an expansive bird-and-flower composition. A small bird is shown perched quietly on a horizontally extending branch, its head inclined downward and its elongated tail following the natural line of the branch. Flowering sprays, leafy stems, fruiting branches, and clusters of bamboo surround the bird, creating the impression of a cultivated garden rendered in a spontaneous painterly manner. Rather than relying on rigid symmetry, the composition unfolds naturally around the curved surface of the vessel. As the meiping is turned, the viewer encounters successive passages of branches, blossoms, foliage, and bamboo, giving the decoration the visual rhythm of a continuous hand-painted landscape. The branches are drawn with expressive, sometimes forceful cobalt strokes, while leaves and blossoms are articulated through alternating washes and darker outlines. This variation in brushwork gives the surface considerable movement and distinguishes the decoration from more mechanically repeated designs. Near the base, the principal scene is enclosed by double horizontal lines above a continuous band of scrolling floral decoration. The scrolling stems move rhythmically around the lower body, with blossoms and leaves arranged in alternating sequence. This lower register visually anchors the vessel and creates a deliberate three-part decorative program: geometric diaper ornament at the shoulder, a broad and open bird-and-flower composition across the body, and a compact scrolling floral band at the foot. The cobalt varies naturally from medium blue to deeper, more saturated passages where the pigment has pooled or was applied more heavily. Against the softly toned white glaze, these variations create a vivid blue-and-white contrast and preserve the unmistakable character of hand-painted decoration. The neck and upper shoulder remain largely undecorated above the patterned band, allowing the clean form of the vessel to serve as a visual transition and further emphasizing the richly painted shoulder decoration below. The underside is broadly unglazed and reveals the pale ceramic body together with circular potting and finishing marks. Natural staining and wear across the base contribute to the vessel’s long-held character. From an American collecting perspective, the appeal of the piece lies in the combination of a highly recognizable Chinese form, a bold decorative structure, and a particularly approachable bird-and-flower subject. The contrast between the disciplined geometric shoulder band and the freer, almost calligraphic painting of the garden scene gives the vessel considerable decorative presence. Birds among flowering branches have long carried associations with harmony, prosperity, seasonal renewal, and an idealized natural world in Chinese decorative art. Together with the monumental visual balance of the meiping form, these elements make the vessel especially effective as both a historical ceramic object and a strong display piece.
