Uniform grayish celadon glaze is covered with fine ancient natural craze all over the surface, carrying soft antique luster with original untouched burial patina. All applied three-dimensional lotus and pearl decorations are fully intact with no chipping or loss, circular smoke vents on the lid remain perfectly shaped without damage. The foot base exposes gray-white clay body with dry solid texture, no artificial polishing or re-glazing to fake age. Category: Yue kiln celadon of Northern and Southern Dynasties, pre-Song ancient porcelain, market destination: Hong Kong. This incense burner was part of the private collection of Wilson Wong, a veteran specialist collector of Six Dynasties celadon in Hong Kong. He purchased this artifact at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Six Dynasties Ceramics Auction in 2017, complete original auction records, thermoluminescence dating report and national official antique ceramic appraisal certificate are fully preserved.Description: This tall-stemmed Boshan incense burner with applied lotus relief glazed in Yue kiln celadon from China’s Northern and Southern Dynasties is a premium ritual incense vessel for noble families and Buddhist temples during the Six Dynasties period. The whole piece is assembled from four matching components: domed vented lid, lotus-petal burner chamber, spiral carved tall stem and wide-rim ash-catching tray. Its design merges the classic Boshan censer silhouette with iconic Buddhist lotus motifs popular in the 5th and 6th centuries, showcasing distinct period aesthetics. The domed lid is topped with a pearl finial, layered rows of sculpted round lotus ornaments wrap around the lid surface, and evenly spaced circular holes are carved to slowly release incense smoke during burning. The burner chamber is molded into segmented lotus petal shapes, covered with raised embossed lotus pearl decorations that deliver rich three-dimensional layering. The central tall supporting stem is carved with continuous spiral ring lines with smooth primitive carving lines. Beneath the stem sits a wide flared shallow tray with an outward splayed foot base, which stabilizes the whole censer and catches falling incense ash. Original grayish celadon glaze coats both interior and exterior of the entire vessel with consistent thickness and soft muted pale green tone. Over more than one thousand years of natural aging, fine interlocking ice crack craze spreads across the whole glaze with subtle restrained soft sheen. The foot base is left unglazed to reveal the typical gray-white hard clay exclusive to Northern and Southern Dynasties Yue kiln production, with naturally weathered texture on bare clay areas. Buddhism flourished widely during the Six Dynasties, and lotus-pattern incense burners served as core ritual wares in temples and elite scholar studies. Fully intact matching Yue kiln tall-stem Boshan censers with complete preserved decorative reliefs are extremely scarce on today’s antique market. This specimen features ingenious layered structural design, plump vivid applied lotus carvings, naturally aged all-over glaze craze and authentic period clay base craftsmanship that fully match standard Yue kiln manufacturing techniques of the Six Dynasties. It acts as a vital physical specimen for academic research on Northern and Southern Dynasties Buddhist ceramics, Yue kiln celadon production technology and ancient Chinese incense culture. It holds profound archaeological research value for early Chinese ceramic history, timeless ornamental aesthetic value for traditional antique interior display and top-tier collectible value for global high-end ancient porcelain collectors.
