拍品描述 翻译
Dimensions: Overall Height 52cm (20.47in), Shoulder Width 42cm (16.54in), 14th to 15th CenturyCondition & Provenance: Category: Buddhist Sculpture, primary market destination Bangkok. This stone Buddha originates from the private collection of Sophia Wilson, a prominent Southeast Asian art collector based in Miami, Florida, USA. She acquired this sculpture from a long-established antique gallery in Bangkok back in 2019. The entire statue is structurally intact, free of major breaks, large missing fragments or spliced restoration work. The native volcanic stone retains its original coarse, natural texture, covered with smooth, centuries-old inherited patina all over the surface. The spiral snail curls on the Buddha’s cranial protuberance are fully defined and undamaged, the facial features and soft facial contours remain perfectly preserved. The robe carving on the right-shoulder garment is crisp, and the decorative sash folds on the rear side are fully intact. The Buddha sits in full lotus meditation posture, with the right hand forming Bhumisparsha Mudra and left hand resting in Dhyana Mudra, the symbolic hand gestures crisp and recognizable. There is only one small shallow chip on the left knee, purely natural wear from age, with no modern stone filler repairs or artificial stained patina treatments. Complete supporting documents are attached: professional dating appraisal for Southeast Asian stone sculpture, original Bangkok antique purchase paperwork, and full US customs cultural artifact import filing records.Description: This monumental volcanic stone seated Shakyamuni Buddha, dating back to the 14th–15th century Southeast Asia, represents a top-tier ancient stone Buddhist carving. It is carved from a single solid block of local volcanic rock, the coarse stone carries a calm, warm antique patina built over hundreds of years, delivering a quiet, primitive spiritual texture. The Buddha sits in full cross-legged lotus posture, the right hand resting over the knee in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the symbolic gesture of the Buddha defeating demons and attaining enlightenment; the left hand rests calmly on the lap in Dhyana Mudra, following the classic canonical iconography for Southeast Asian Shakyamuni statues. The head holds well-balanced proportions, covered in uniform tight spiral hair curls topped by a prominent cranial ushnisha, elongated ears falling gently to the shoulders with a subtle urna mark between the brows. The Buddha’s eyes are softly half-lidded with a serene, compassionate facial expression, refined mild facial lines abandoning over-the-top ornate decoration to deliver pure meditative tranquility. The Buddha wears a standard right-shoulder monk’s robe, leaving the right torso bare while a single sash drapes over the left shoulder. The trailing fabric strap on the back is carved with delicate scroll patterns using simple, robust carving strokes. The body form is softly realistic, with smooth rounded contours on the chest and limbs, rejecting exaggerated stylization and fully embodying the minimalist, restrained aesthetic of mid-period Southeast Asian Buddhist art. The whole sculpture is carved as one solid piece, the volcanic stone matrix remains stable with no crumbling weathering. Only a tiny ancient chip exists on the left knee, all carved decorative details stay sharp and legible. Large intact volcanic stone Buddha statues are scarce on today’s global antique market. This piece boasts generous proportions, canonical iconography and well-preserved original condition. It holds significant academic research value for Southeast Asian Buddhist art history, outstanding meditative decorative appeal for interior spaces, and is highly sought-after by veteran American and European collectors specializing in ancient Southeast Asian fine art, qualifying as a museum-worthy stone sculpture treasure.
