The iconography of the bottle, with the phoenix resting under a wutong tree, links it to the Empress as a representative of Imperial power. Compare an exceptional bottle of tapered ovoid form carved with a golden phoenix under a sun reversed by one in flight, Yuanming Yuan, Guyue Xuan mark, 1767-1799, in the Crane Collection, bottle ID 203. Another related bottle is published by Moss, Graham and Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle: The J & J Collection, 1993, no. 202. See also a carved bottle of related shape and carving from the George and Miriam Bloch Collection, published by Moss, Graham, and Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 6, Part I, Arts of the Fire, no. 1101, pp. 218-19. And a carved and enameled bottle with a Guyue Xuan mark from the Rachelle Holden Collection was sold at Christie's New York, 24 March 2022, lot 811, carved with a basket filled with flowers.
