PROPERTY FROM A NEW YORK COLLECTOR 紐約顯赫私人珍藏SCHOOL OF GUISEPPE CASTIGLIONE (LANG SHINING, 1688-1766)
Qing Court Ladies in Western Dress, 18th centurySet of six portraits, ink and color on paper, mounted, framed and glazed, unsigned and absent artist seals.69 x 17 5/8in (175 x 44.8cm), the largest
Provenance: The Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, 8 June 2000Portraits of court ladies in Western-style dress following this particular format appear originally to have constituted a set of at least twelve compositions, with versions executed on both paper and silk. The present lot comprises six distinct compositions: Lady with a fan, Lady watching goldfish, Lady playing with a puppy, Lady feeding a white parrot, Lady holding a pomegranate, and Lady with a child chasing butterflies. A seventh composition is represented by lot 233 in the present sale, depicting a Lady fingering prayer bead. The Royal Ontario Museum preserves paintings corresponding in composition to lot 233 (accession no. 2020.49.4; fig. 1), as well as to Lady watching goldfish (2020.49.1; fig. 2) and Lady with a fan (2020.49.3; fig. 3) from the present lot. The museum also holds two further compositions from the series, respectively depicting a Lady admiring fruits in a glass vessel and a Lady with a child picking grapes, bringing the number of known compositions to nine. Two further paintings of the same type were offered at Poly, Beijing, on 6 June 2016 in its sale of The Imperial Ceramics and Works of Art, lot 7533. One follows the same composition as Lady feeding a white parrot in the present lot, while the other depicts a Lady holding a flower basket, representing a tenth known composition. Bonhams, New York, also offered a painting from the series on 21 July 2020, lot 31, depicting a Lady leisurely watching cats at play, constituting an eleventh composition.Across these eleven known compositions, the ladies' coiffures, costumes, together with the architecture and furnishings, reveal a distinctive fusion of Chinese and Western elements, entirely in keeping with the cosmopolitan taste of the Qianlong period. The prototypes for this series of hanging scrolls depicting court beauties may even have originated in paintings intended for the decoration of the Summer Palace.
