Description ink and color on paper, framed Height 55? in., 140 cm; Width 29? in., 75.3 cm Condition report Provenance E&J Frankel, New York, circa 2016. Catalogue note Aisin Gioro Yun’e (1683–1741), the tenth son of the Kangxi Emperor, was born to Noble Consort Wenxi of the powerful Niohuru clan and was a maternal grandson of Ebilun (d. 1673), one of the four regents appointed during the early years of the Kangxi reign. In 1709, Yun’e was granted the title of Prince Dun of the Second Rank (Dun junwang). Like many of his brothers, Yun’e became embroiled in the bitter political struggles surrounding the ascension to the throne after the death of Kangxi Emperor. Following the accession of his fourth brother as the Yongzheng Emperor in 1723, Yun’e fell from favor for his close association with the princes Yunsi and Yuntang and his alleged involvement in factional intrigues with Nian Gengyao (1680-1726), a prominent general who had helped the Yongzheng Emperor secure the throne, and Longkodo (1658-1728), the Yongzheng Emperor's powerful maternal uncle and commander of the Beijing garrison. Stripped of his rank and placed under house arrest in Beijing, he remained in confinement for more than a decade. Only in 1737, following the accession of the Qianlong Emperor and a general amnesty extended to members of the imperial clan, was Yun’e released and restored to the rank of Fuguo Gong (Duke Who Assists the State). He died in 1741 and was interred with the honors accorded to a beizi, or Prince of the Third Rank. Executed in the meticulous gongbi tradition with precise linework and carefully modulated washes of color, the painting combines the formality of Qing imperial portraiture with the intimate atmosphere of a literati studio. The book, potted pine and marble-inset screen were surely chosen to present Yun’e not merely as a prince removed from political life, but as a cultivated gentleman devoted to learning, contemplation and self-discipline. This subtle fusion of official portraiture and the imagery of private self-cultivation distinguishes the present work from the more conventional ceremonial portraits of Qing imperial princes. There are no other portraits of Yun'e in this style. Compare a portrait of Prince Guo also in this scholarly setup, from the collection of Richard G. Pritzlaff (1902-1997), first sold in these rooms, 22nd March 2001, lot 138, again in the same rooms, 25th March 2026, lot 182.
