Signed lower right in English and Chinese, Liu Kang, 1955. Mounted on card. Artwork 32.4cm x 23.2cm. Historical Significance: This work represents a definitive peak in Liu Kang?s career. It directly follows his historic 1952 Bali field trip with fellow pioneer artists Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, and Chen Chong Swee. This excursion birthed the Nanyang style, seamlessly blending Western Post-Impressionism with Southeast Asian themes. Artistic Execution: During this period, Liu Kang focused on human anatomy, local dancers, and female figures. This 1955 sketch showcases his signature technique and fluid line work. Recognition: The artist donated over 1,000 of his artworks to the National Gallery Singapore and the Singapore Art Museum. The Singapore government awarded him the Public Service Star (1970) and the Meritorious Service Medal (1996). Ref: Four similar works also executed in 1955 were sold at Christie's Hong Kong sale; A Special Selection of Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art, 24 November 2013, Lot 7066. Provenance: Inherited from the current vendor's aunt in 1970, thence by descent. English private collection.
