A DEHUA PORCELAIN FIGURE OF SEATED GUANYIN, HE CHAOZONG MARK, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

China, Fujian Province, Dehua kilns. The elegant figure is shown seated with the left arm supported by an arm rest while holding a fly whisk in the left hand and resting the right hand on the raised right knee. Her layered robes are tied with a knotted cord and fall in graceful folds around the body. The face is modeled with delicate features, and the hair is worn in knotted tresses that fall across the shoulders, and in a topknot secured by a hair pin. The glaze is of an exceptionally beautiful and even pale ivory tone.

Inscriptions: The reverse impressed with the maker’s mark, ‘He Chaozong’, enclosed within a double-gourd cartouche. The base is further incised with the characters ‘erdi’.

Dimensions: Height 20.9 cm

With a fitted and padded silk storage box. (2)

The present figure is one of a group from the Dehua kilns bearing the seal impression of the celebrated potter He Chaozong. As his dates are unrecorded, He Chaozong was previously thought to have worked in the first half of the 17th century. Later research has revealed that he was already active in the 16th century and some Chinese scholars even believe him to have been active as early as 1522 (see R. Kerr, ‘Introductory Remarks on Dehua Ware, in John Ayers, Rose Kerr, et al., Blanc de Chine: Porcelain from Dehua, A Catalogue of the Hickley Collection, 2002, p. 10).

Guanyin, known in Sanskrit as Avalokiteshvara, the Boddhisatva of Compassion, was among the most popular sculptural subjects produced at the Dehua kilns during the Ming and early Qing dynasties. Over time, Guanyin became deeply integrated into Chinese religious life, art, and material culture as one of the principal figures of the Buddhist pantheon. The bodhisattva was the focus of devotional practices centered on individual salvation and was also venerated as the protector of mariners and the bestower of sons. Figures of this type were most likely intended for private devotion and would have been enshrined on a domestic household altar.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Dehua figure of Guanyin with a He Chaozong mark, exhibiting a similarly effusive drapery, dated 18th-19th century, 15.3 cm high, formerly in the collection of Sir Percival David and now in the British Museum, registration number PDF.415. Compare a related Dehua figure of Guanyin, dated 19th century, 15.6 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1971.180.245.
