? A HUANGHUALI DEMI-LUNE TABLE, YUEYAZHUO, QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Scientific Analysis Report: A xylological analysis report issued by CIRAM Science for Art Cultural Heritage on 1 September 2026, test number 0726-OA-1261J-11, examines a wood sample taken from the top of one leg using stereomicroscopic and metallographic microscopy. The study, conducted by xylologist Joey Montagut, identifies the wood as Dalbergia odorifera of the Fabaceae family, commonly known as huanghuali. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.

China. Of half-moon form, raised on three slender cabriole legs, with a gently arched apron below, finely carved with scrolling motifs centering on a pointed ruyi-shaped cartouche above the front leg. The rounded cabriole legs terminate in hoof-feet carved with further scrolls standing on a joined semicircular base stretcher.

Provenance: From a German private collection, acquired ca. 1900, and thence by descent in the family. A private collection in the Netherlands, acquired from the above. The back inscribed with a old inventory number “34586/3”.
Condition: Good condition with typical wear and manufacturing irregularities. Tiny nicks, few chips, remnants of wax and pigments, light surface scratches. The stretcher with an old repair and associated cracks and chips. Presenting splendidly.

Weight: 14 kg
Dimensions: Size 91.6 x 87 x 44.9 cm

Half-round tables are recorded in the Ming carpenter's manuals, Lu Ban jing, suggesting they were once more common than the few surviving examples would seem to indicate. A demi-lune table and two outline drawings are illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture, vol. II, p. 118, B125-B127.

Expert’s note: Thought to be made in pairs, demi-lune tables were usually designed to be pushed together to form a single round table, often indicated by mortises and tenons along the undecorated back edges that physically interlocked the two elements. In the present example, however, the absence of such joinery, together with the finished feet, terminating in elegant ball feet carved with scrolls, the rounded cabriole legs, and the lobed shape of the apron, suggests that the present demi-lune table was designed as a singular example and not as one of a pair.
