AN EMERALD-GREEN AND SANCAI-GLAZED ‘GALLOPING HORSES’ APPLIQUé-DECORATED POTTERY JAR, TANG DYNASTY

Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 7 May 2009, based on sample number C109e98, sets the firing date of the two samples taken between 900 and 1500 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.

Expert’s note
While jars of this form are well represented among Tang-dynasty ceramics, examples enriched with applied decoration like the present lot are notably rarer. The current vessel is further distinguished by the particularly imaginative motifs enlivening its surface, including horses in full stride and most remarkably two small handles modeled as crouching rabbits. Although the recumbent hare was a familiar motif in Tang-dynasty pottery, its use as a handle is highly unusual. The exceptional character and rarity of the jar are further underscored by its distinctive sancai palette, dominated by a rich emerald-green glaze covering almost the entire exterior and lending the vessel its remarkable visual richness and distinction.

China, 618-907. Skillfully potted, the globular body is supported on a short, slightly tapered foot and rises to high, rounded shoulders, set with two small handles in the form of crouching rabbits, below a short, gently everted rim encircling a broad mouth. The exterior is applied with galloping horses amid blossoming lotus and smaller flower heads, all beneath a rich sancai glaze dominated by the characteristic emerald-green tone. The finely crackled glaze stops short of the base and the interior of the rim, revealing the buff ware.

Provenance: Collection of Louis Depagne, Nice, France, thence by descent. Collection d’un Grand Amateur Fran?ais, acquired from the above. Louis Depagne (1926-2006) was a French antiquarian, collector, and connoisseur of Asian art, active in Nice from the 1950s. Having begun his career as an antiques dealer at the Marché aux Puces, he later established Curiosités in Nice, specializing in Chinese and Japanese works of art, including ceramics, bronzes, sculpture, and textiles. Depagne developed his passion for Chinese art through scholarly reading and the formation of his own collection, which, according to the Indian writer and art historian Baldoon Dhingra in 1958, he assembled “with an almost instinctive feeling for the delicacy, charm, and sense of peace that Orientalia always brought him”. His friend and fellow collector Marcel Gerbe likewise recalled him as a knowledgeable sinologist and discerning connoisseur, distinguished by the exacting standards he consistently applied when selecting objects for acquisition. As Depagne himself would often tell Gerbe, “The pebbles on the beach are thousands of years old, but that alone does not make them valuable.”
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected ancient wear and manufacturing irregularities, including small firing cracks, as well as the minor old repairs and touchups typically found on authentic Tang-dynasty ceramics. Remnants of old varnish.
French Export License: Certificat d’exportation pour un bien culturel, nr. 129970, dated 19 August 2011, has been granted. A copy of this document accompanies this lot.
