AN IMPORTANT POLISHED BLACK STONE FIGURE OF THE JINA MAHAVIRA, RAJASTHAN, 11TH CENTURY

Western India. Finely carved, the Jina seated in dhyanasana on an ornate cushion densely carved with foliate and geometric designs. His hands lowered in dhyana mudra. His rib cage rises in iconographically prescribed diagonals towards his broad chest, bearing the shrivatsa mark which is picked-out in ancient cinnabar pigment between his smooth pectorals. His arms extend from broad shoulders, his neck displays the trivali mark.

He shows a determined yet charming expression with large eyes, bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile, a pronounced chin, and rounded cheeks, flanked by elongated earlobes. His hair is neatly arranged in numerous snail-shell curls, and surmounted by a cylindrical protrusion to the top, and framed by a halo projecting radiating rays.

Provenance: The family collection of Goethals de Mude de Nieuwland, Castle Borgwal, Gavere, Belgium, acquired between the 1930s and 1950s. Thence presented to their in-house staff, Mr. and Mrs. V.M.-L., Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium, upon their retirement as a token of gratitude, and thence by descent within the same family. Castle Borgwal is a historic estate situated near Gavere in East Flanders, Belgium. Originally established in the 16th century and extensively rebuilt during the 18th century, it is one of the region's finest preserved water castles. The estate was formerly owned by the distinguished Flemish noble family of Pottelsberghe and later by Bishop Antonius Triest, one of the most important art patrons in the Southern Netherlands during the 17th century. Surrounded by extensive landscaped grounds, Borgwal has remained an important historic country seat for centuries and today is protected as a Belgian cultural heritage monument. The Goethals de Mude de Nieuwland were among the distinguished noble families of Belgium, with their lineage tracing back several centuries in Flanders. Through the marriage of Countess Flora Malfait to Louis Goethals de Mude de Nieuwland in the nineteenth century, Castle Borgwal became the family's principal country residence, remaining in their possession for well over a century. The family was closely associated with the political, social, and cultural life of East Flanders, preserving the historic estate and its collections until its sale in 1975. Their long stewardship of Borgwal firmly established the castle as one of the region's most notable aristocratic residences.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, signs of weathering, encrustations, structural fissures, remnants of ritual pigment. The stone with a fine, naturally grown, lustrous patina.

Weight: 58.2 kg
Dimensions: Height 60 cm

This elegant figure probably depicts the Jina Mahavira (circa 480-408 BC), the historical founder of Jainism, a near contemporary of the Buddha Shakyamuni in the fifth century BC. The present statue is a superlative example of 11th century Jain sculpture. Sensuously modeled, the broad shoulders, short neck and narrow waist of the seated Jina demonstrate the powerful and meditative equipoise of the subject.

Jainism was established in India around the sixth century BC and flourished alongside Hinduism and Buddhism. The ultimate goal of the Jains or ‘conquerors’ was to achieve liberation from the cycle of reincarnations. They worship a group of twenty-four Supreme Teachers or Tirthankaras, arihants who after attaining kevala jnana (pure infinite knowledge) preach the dharma. An arihant is also called Jina (victor), one who has conquered inner enemies such as anger, attachment, pride, and greed.
