拍品描述 翻译
AN INSCRIBED GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF DIPANKARA BUDDHA, TIBET, 16TH-17TH CENTURY

Expert’s note
The figure displays a distinctive physicality, with a powerfully modeled torso, broad shoulders narrowing gracefully toward the waist, and a balanced, dignified stance. This combination of anatomical emphasis and refined posture points to a Nepalese aesthetic influence. Such stylistic and technical hallmarks closely align with works associated with the celebrated Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Shigatse, an important center of the Gelugpa tradition in Tibet.

X-ray images of the present lot (available upon request) reveal that the left arm was cast separately and affixed to the body with three pegs and a nail.

Seated in vajraparyankasana on a double-lotus base with beaded edges, neatly incised at the top beneath each knee with consecrated and dedicatory inscriptions. His hands are held in dharmachakra mudra, the palms and soles incised with a dharmachakra wheels, he is wearing a long flowing robe finely engraved to the hems with foliate designs lined by a finely beaded border, gathering in carved and beaded folds at the base, and detailed to the back with further hems and a square ‘double vajra’ panel. The serene face with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, gently arched brows centered by an urna, and full lips accentuated in red and forming a calm smile. The hair arranged in tight curls over the domed ushnisha topped by a jewel.

Inscriptions: At the top of the base to the front left, ‘Tse deh malok ghi thon du schek soh’ (‘This statue is made for the deceased [woman] Logus’), the front right with the name ‘Yangchen’ and the number ‘564’.

Provenance: The private collection of a gentleman in Sweden. Beijers Auctions, Sweden, 1984, lot 575 (dated as 18th century). A private collection in Sweden, acquired from the above. The base with an old label inscribed in Swedish, ‘Sino-Tibetan […] Hand[…] bronze […] 1700- tal’.
Condition: Good condition with expected old wear, small dents, minor rubbing to the gilt, little corrosion at the seam lines. The base resealed with fine cracks along the seam and traces of soldering.

Weight: 2,480 g
Dimensions: Height 27.1 cm

Dipankara is the Buddha of the Past, belonging to the cosmic age preceding that of Shakyamuni Buddha. According to Buddhist tradition, a wealthy Brahmin named Sumati encountered Dipankara as he was about to cross a muddy puddle. To prevent the Buddha from soiling his feet, Sumati spread his long hair across the ground before him. Witnessing this act of devotion, Dipankara prophesied that Sumati would in a future age attain enlightenment as Shakyamuni Buddha.

In Tibetan art, Dipankara is most frequently represented together with Shakyamuni and Maitreya, forming the Buddhas of the Three Times—Dipankara representing the past, Shakyamuni the present, and Maitreya the future—often arranged as a triad.
