拍品描述 翻译
? A SUPERB WHITE JADE ‘LOTUS AND EGRET’ TEAPOT AND COVER, 18TH TO EARLY 19TH CENTURY

China. The teapot is masterfully carved in openwork as a lotus pod with small circular incisions framing the deeply hollowed mouth, curling stems forming the handle and issuing blossoms and leaves that elegantly frame the exterior and extend to form the base. A large leaf serves as the spout, with a finely carved spider perched at its opening, while an egret adorns one side of the vessel.

The accompanying cover is similarly rendered as a lotus leaf, surmounted by an openwork lotus spray and egret.

The stone is of an elegant white hue with cloudy inclusions.

Provenance
: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 9 October 2020, lot 3644, mid-estimate HKD 2,150,000 or approx. EUR 262,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). The private collection of Jules Speelman, London. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a tiny nibble to the tip of the scroll on the cover. Tiny sections have possibly been lightly polished to remove earlier nibbles.

Weight: 689 g (excl. stand), 776 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 13.5 cm (excl. stand), 16.5 cm (incl. stand)

With a fitted old wood stand finely carved in the form of crashing waves over a lobed base raised on four short feet, and padded storage box. (3)

The present piece belongs to a distinctive group of 18th-century jade wares characterized by intricate floral compositions and exceptional technical refinement. The complex, precisely executed openwork designs demonstrate both the remarkable skill of Qing jade carvers and their mastery of the challenging medium.

The decoration of the jade teapot conveys auspicious wishes for academic achievement and success in the civil service examinations. The recumbent bird carved on the finial represents an egret (lu), a visual pun on the word for ‘road’, while the lotus (lian) and its seeds (ke) form a rebus for lianke, meaning to pass successive levels of the examinations. Together, these motifs create the auspicious phrase ‘yilu lianke’, expressing the wish that one may progress continuously along the path to scholarly success.
