? A HU-FORM VASE AND COVER, FINELY CARVED FROM CHLOROMELANITE-JADE, 18TH CENTURY

Expert’s note
Chloromelanite belongs to the broader family of hardstones historically grouped under the term jade. Jade is not a single mineral species but principally encompasses two mineralogical groups, nephrite and jadeite-related pyroxene rocks, the latter including jadeite-, omphacite-, and other sodium-rich pyroxene varieties. Chloromelanite is an older mineralogical term applied to an exceptionally dark, iron-rich pyroxene jade, generally composed of jadeitic and omphacitic components. It is distinguished by its characteristic deep green color with distinct black markings, caused principally by its elevated iron content, and by its dense, compact structure and characteristically lustrous surface when highly polished.
In Chinese works of art, such material belongs to the broader group of jadeite-related stones originating principally from Burma (present-day Myanmar). These materials began to reach China in appreciable quantities during the Qing dynasty and became particularly prized during the 18th century, when Burmese jadeite and related pyroxene jades increasingly entered the imperial and elite lapidary tradition. Chloromelanite jade may therefore be understood as a rare, particularly dark member of the wider family of pyroxene jades that became established in China during the Qianlong period.

China. Of flattened square baluster form, the body carved in low relief with taotie masks to the lower section, the neck adorned with archaistic chilong handles, centered to the front and back by two lion masks, and the domed cover surmounted by a finial in the form of two opposing birds with long tails trailing down towards the rim.

The opaque stone is of an extremely rich emerald-green color throughout with scattered black inclusions.

Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years.
