A MOLDED DINGYAO ‘PEONIES’ DISH, JIN DYNASTY

China, 1115-1234. The shallow dish with a scalloped rim above radiating petals on the sides, crisply molded at the center with peony blossoms amid other auspicious flowers, and covered overall in an even pale ivory glaze suffused with fine crackles.

Provenance: Collection of Solomon and Hannah Shahmoon, New Rochelle, New York, and thence by descent. The base with an old label inscribed with an inventory number ‘505’. Solomon E. Shahmoon (1893-1987) emigrated to Shanghai from Baghdad in 1911 and became a renowned property developer and financier during the peak of the early 20th century building boom and the city's development as the major commercial center in Asia. His success was capped in 1927 by the construction of the eight-story Shahmoon Building dominating the Bund and sited above their Art Deco masterpiece, The Capitol Theater. In 1928 Mr. Shahmoon made Paris his residence, visiting Shanghai periodically to invest in property. In 1938 he re-visited Baghdad where he met and married Hannah, and the couple settled in Paris where their first daughter was born. The Shahmoons collected art, objects, carpets, and furniture, and at the end of 1939, left Paris ahead of the Nazis for New York, where they settled permanently, first in Manhattan and then in New Rochelle. Much of their collection from both Shanghai and Paris was eventually reunited with them in New Rochelle, where they raised their four daughters in their large, Spanish-style stucco home.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few firing irregularities including a deep glaze recess where the well meets the cavetto, minor warping, and a small shallow chip to the cavetto.

Weight: 117 g
Dimensions: Diameter 13.9 cm

By the late Northern Song period, Dingyao craftsmen utilized molds to neatly produce the vessel shapes while simultaneously impressing the decoration. The use of such molds achieved greater production efficiency which allowed craftsmen to meet increasing market demand.

The molds used were meticulously crafted and similar to those used to cast decoration on gold and silver works of art. Typically, Dingyao molded decoration included chrysanthemum or peonies, such as seen on the present lot, flying birds like ducks or cranes, composite leafy floral motifs, dragons and fishes.
