A FINE AND RARE ‘CASSETTE-GUL’ KHOTAN CARPET, 19TH CENTURY

Published: Hans Achim Lorentz, A View of Chinese Rugs, London, 1972, no. 5.

Western China, Xinjiang province, ancient region of East Turkestan. Finely woven in wool with a dense pile, the rectangular field arranged in a rigorous lattice of alternating polychrome guls, each formed as a stylized radiating flowerhead in ivory and madder red, enclosed within interlocking angular fretwork picked out in ivory, deep indigo blue, and red. The compartmented field is framed by a narrow floral border of delicate blossoms and leaves, followed by a broad outer border of boldly drawn reciprocal cloud-heads, all within narrow guard stripes.

Expert’s note: The present carpet belongs to the distinctive gul group of East Turkestan weavings, in which a Central Asian medallion vocabulary is combined with geometric fretwork and border motifs ultimately derived from Chinese ornament. Lorentz regarded the Gül pattern as one of the principal design groups of Eastern Turkestan carpets, alongside the vase-pomegranate and medallion types. Particularly characteristic here is the disciplined compartmental arrangement of alternating flowerhead guls within an interlocking fretwork lattice, contrasted with the boldly drawn reciprocal cloud-head border.

Provenance: Collection of H. A. Lorentz, assembled in China before 1949. Hans Achim Lorentz (1899–1974) was a German jurist, scholar, and important early collector of Chinese carpets. He lived in China from 1922 until 1949, teaching at Tongji University and assembling and studying his collection during this period. His extensive research culminated in the seminal publication A View of Chinese Rugs from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century, published by Routledge & Kegan Paul in 1972. Rugs from his collection, several of which were illustrated in his publications, are documented as having been acquired in China before 1949.
Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear, the back fitted for mounting.
