A MUGHAL-STYLE SPINACH-GREEN JADE ‘CHRYSANTHEMUM’ DISH, QING DYNASTY

China, 18th-19th century. Finely carved with lobed sides evoking chrysanthemum petals, rising from a short foot to an everted rim. The interior is carved in high relief with a central chrysanthemum blossom. The translucent stone is of a richly variegated spinach-green tone with black and russet veining as well as paler shadings.

Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom. The underside of the dish with remnants of an old label from a member of the British Antique Dealers' Association.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 537.2 g
Dimensions: Diameter 19.9 cm

The Qianlong Emperor was deeply fascinated by Mughal jades, from which the present lot draws inspiration. His interest extended to scholarly inquiry, culminating in his 1768 treatise ‘Tianzhu Wuyindu Kao’, a study of the geography and nomenclature of Hindustan. The earliest recorded Mughal jade entered the Qing court in 1758 as a gift from the Dzungars. Following the Qing conquest of Xinjiang in 1759, which brought the jade-producing region of Hetian under imperial control, such works reached the court in increasing numbers as tribute from officials and local leaders. So profound was the admiration of the Qianlong Emperor for these carvings that he commissioned the imperial workshops to produce jades in the Mughal style, a practice that continued throughout his reign and beyond.
