A NEOLITHIC PAINTED POTTERY DUCK-FORM VESSEL, QIJIA CULTURE

Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 6 August 2026, based on sample number C126j70, sets the firing date of both samples taken between 3200 and 4800 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.

Expert’s note
Neatly painted in sepia with geometric designs forming a herringbone-like pattern similar to the triangular lappets and cross-hatched motifs characteristic of contemporaneous Neolithic wares. The geometric designs are comparable to those found on other pottery vessels of the period and were likely inspired by motifs drawn from the potters’ daily environment, perhaps evoking elements of the natural world, such as mountains reflected in water. Compare a small jar of plain form, painted in similar tones with triangular motifs, dated Qijia Culture, illustrated in Ronald W. Longsdorf, The Pottery Age: An Appreciation of Neolithic Ceramics from China, Circa 7000 BC - Circa 1000 BC, Hong Kong, 2020, pl. 73, and later sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 25 November 2022, lot 830.

China, 2050-1700 BC. Dexterously modeled, the double-tapered body evoking a highly abstracted avian form, set upon a conical foot, and extending into a fragmented tail-like projection and a slightly raised narrowing mouth with a subtly everted rim, flanked by small loop handles. The surface is boldly painted in reddish-brown tones, organized into several registers containing cross-hatched patterns and rhomboidal motifs.

Provenance: The private collection of a Swedish missionary, assembled in Gansu Province, China, during the 1940s, and thence by descent. Collection of Lennart Utterstr?m, Sweden, by 2011. Collection of Dr. Erik Lampl, Paris, acquired from the above. A copy of the purchase agreement between Lennart Utterstr?m and Erik Lampl, detailing a down-payment plan starting July 2011 and stating a purchase price for the present lot of SEK 100,000 or approx. EUR 12,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies the lot. Lennart Utterstr?m (b. 1948) is a Swedish visual artist, writer, and former journalist whose work reflects a lifelong engagement with Asian culture, history, and aesthetics. After an early career writing on international affairs and education, particularly in East and Southeast Asia, he devoted himself increasingly to the visual arts, producing paintings, drawings, prints, and ink works inspired by both Scandinavian and Asian artistic traditions. His publications include works on Chinese art and exhibitions of his own artwork. He also has a background as an art professor at Hengyang Normal University in Hunan, China, an experience that further shaped his cross-cultural artistic practice and deep connection with Chinese art and education.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, firing irregularities, signs of prolonged burial, rubbing and minor losses to pigments, few light touchups, minor old repairs primarily to the mouth and foot.

Weight: 1.8 kg
Dimensions: Height 22.5 cm, Length 41.2 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Yangshao culture boat-shaped vessel, excavated in 1958 in Beishouling, Shaanxi, and now in the National Museum of China.
