A LARGE SANDSTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA, AYUTTHAYA, 14TH-15TH CENTURY

Thailand. Gracefully carved with a gentle expression, the heavy-lidded eyes framed by curved brows meeting at center, straight nose, and contoured lips in a tight pursed smile, the hair arranged in neat rows of curls rising to the domed ushnisha and coming to a point at the forehead.

Provenance: With the Boris Mirski Gallery, 1944–1979, according to information provided orally by the present owner. This information has been passed down through several previous owners and is not supported by specific documentary evidence. However, we consider the source and the transmitted provenance to be credible. Thereafter with Galerie Grusenmeyer Woliner, Brussels, Belgium.
Boris Mirski Gallery was a Boston art gallery owned by Boris Chaim Mirski (1898–1974). The gallery was known for exhibiting key figures in Boston Expressionism, New York and international modern art styles and non-western art. For years, the gallery dominated with both figurative and African work. As an art dealer, Mirski was known for supporting young, emerging artists, including many Jewish-Americans, as well as artists of color, women artists and immigrants. As a result of Mirski's avant-garde approach to art and diversified approach to dealing art, the gallery was at the center of Boston's burgeoning modern mid-century art scene, as well as instrumental in the birth and development of Boston Expressionism, the most significant branch of American Figurative Expressionism.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, obvious losses, a repair to the right ear, natural imperfections including fissures, scattered nicks and scratches, small chips, and signs of weathering and erosion.

Weight: 36.1 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 48 cm (excl. stand), 54.5 cm (incl. stand)

The precise geographical attribution of Buddha images produced in Cambodia and Thailand during the 12th to 15th centuries is often challenging. Political boundaries were fluid, artistic traditions crossed regional borders, and the gradual expansion of Theravada Buddhism introduced new sculptural conventions alongside the enduring legacy of Angkor. Consequently, terms such as “Khmer,” “Lopburi,” and “Ayutthaya” should not always be understood as rigid geographical classifications, but rather as descriptions of interconnected artistic traditions that developed across present-day Cambodia and Thailand.
The present head may be placed within this transitional context. While certain features retain the legacy of earlier Khmer and Lopburi sculpture, the gentle expression and the regular rows of hair curls rising toward the domed ushnisha point toward the emerging sculptural idiom of early Ayutthaya. Its attribution to Ayutthaya in the 14th–15th century therefore rests not on any single diagnostic feature, but on the particular combination of several stylistic characteristics.
