A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, LOPBURI, 13TH CENTURY

Thailand. Finely cast standing in samapada, the right hand raised in abhaya mudra revealing raised floral emblem on the palm, while the left hand grasps the hem of the robe, dressed in a sheer robe that hangs gracefully from his forearms, with a pleated, tapering hems, and adorned with an ornamental belt and collar. The face with almond-shaped eyes and bow-form lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by elongated earlobes suspending large pendeloque earrings, and the hair arranged into a high conical chignon behind a foliate tiara.

Provenance
: The collection of Gérard Wahl-dit-Boyer, Paris, France, and thence by descent to his wife Madame Claudine Perrot. The private collection of Damien Woliner, Brussels, Belgium, acquired from the above. Gérard Wahl-dit-Boyer (1944-2014), affectionately known as ‘Bébérose’, was a well-known French art dealer and collector based in Paris. Over several decades, he assembled a wide-ranging and eclectic collection, with a focus on African art—especially works from Gabon and the Congo. Wahl-dit-Boyer began traveling extensively in the 1970s, sourcing objects directly from local markets and dealers in regions such as South America, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. He was a regular presence at French flea markets, fairs, and provincial auctions, and was well-known among colleagues and collectors for his broad network and tireless search for unusual or distinctive works. Gérard Wahl-dit-Boyer was also a mentor and teacher of Damien Woliner, the owner of the present lot.

This image of the crowned Buddha
is based on one of the great archetypes in Buddhist art, known as the Kurkihar Buddha. The position of each finger is consistent across all its representations. One hand is held in abhaya mudra, and the other holds the inner hem of the cape-like robe. The delicate way it is held creates movement in the erect frontal image. The concept originated in the Pala Empire, spreading vastly throughout Southeast Asia, China, and the Himalayas, where the subject became integrated with autochthonous beliefs. As a result, the Kurkihar Crowned Buddha image is considered one of the great archetypes in Buddhist art. Compare the Sonnery Kurkihar Buddha, 11th century, see Bonhams Hong Kong, 3 October 2017, lot 16. In the Khmer Empire, the Buddha first appeared in royal attire around the mid-12th century, albeit with both hands raised. This unusual iconographic convention derived from Mon representations of the Buddha of the Dvaravati period (7th-10th centuries) and is associated with both Angkor (Bayon style) and the Buddhist art of Lopburi. The richly ornamental figure type finds its immediate precursor in the lintel reliefs of Pimai, a 12th-century provincial Khmer center in eastern Thailand.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze Buddha, Lopburi, c. 12 century, 35 cm high, exhibited in London by Joost Van den Bergh in Objects of Worship: Jain, Gandhara and Hindu Sculpture, 2017, no. OOW03.
