VAJRAPANI IN THE FORM OF HERACLES, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 2ND-3RD CENTURY BC

Expert’s note
The present figure powerfully illustrates the extraordinary encounter between the Classical world and Buddhist India that gave rise to the art of Gandhara. Herakles, the great hero of Greek mythology, was absorbed into the Gandharan visual vocabulary and became closely associated with Vajrapani, the powerful protector and attendant of the Buddha. His muscular physique, rugged features, and heroic character provided Gandharan sculptors with an ideal Classical model for embodying physical strength and protective force.
What distinguishes the present sculpture, however, is not merely its Classical inheritance but the remarkable intensity with which it has been translated into stone. Despite its diminutive scale—the entire figure measures only 12.8 cm—the sculptor has endowed the head, itself only a few centimeters high, with an astonishing degree of individuality and psychological presence. The deeply set eyes, furrowed brow, powerful nose, and luxuriantly modeled moustache and beard create an expression at once forceful, weary, and profoundly human. Particularly remarkable is the subtle asymmetry of the features, which prevents the face from becoming mask-like and gives it an almost portrait-like immediacy.
Such expressive modeling is exceptional on this minute scale. Indeed, in its concentration of character within so small a format, the present figure need not shy from comparison with the finest Classical representations of Herakles. Yet it is unmistakably a creation of Gandhara: rather than simply copying a Greek or Roman prototype, the sculptor transformed the Classical hero into an image of spiritual intensity, epitomizing the creative synthesis that makes Gandharan sculpture one of the great artistic achievements of the ancient world.

Kushan period. Well-carved from gray schist, featuring the male god as he holds a large stylized vajra in his right hand identifying him as Vajrapani, dressed in a loose robe falling in fine pleads over the torso and shoulder.

Provenance: The present piece comes from the French art market and was reportedly acquired at an estate auction in the Paris area. The Plexiglas base was already mounted at the time of acquisition.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, signs of weathering and erosion, obvious losses, and scattered nicks and chips.

Weight: 337 g (excl. stand), 417 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 12.8 cm (excl. stand), 15.8 cm (incl. stand)

With a modern stand. (2)

Bodhisattva Vajrapani, the protector of Buddhism, is often represented with the iconography of the Greek god Hercules, who was widely venerated as a hero and savior in western Asia during the early centuries of the present era. As a great champion, yet one who nevertheless understood the human condition, Hercules was easily assimilated into Mahayana Buddhism. Like other Gandharan bodhisattvas, he is depicted as an earthly prince with his aristocratic bearing and posture. However, his heavily mustachioed face belongs to the Indian world, while the naturalistic face is reminiscent of Greco-Roman sculpture.

The kingdom of Gandhara lasted from 530 BC to 1021 AD, when its last king was murdered by his own troops. It stretched across parts of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan. Gandhara is noted for its distinctive style in Buddhist art, which developed out of a merger of Greek, Syrian, Persian and Indian artistic influence. Gandharan style flourished and achieved its peak during the Kushan period, from the 1st to the 5th century. In the first century AD, Gandhara was the birthplace of some of the earliest Buddhist images.
