A FINE PAUBHA OF THE VASUDHARA MANDALA, NEPAL, DATED 1862

Gold and distemper on cloth. Finely painted and richly detailed, Vasudhara at the center seated in lalitasana on a lotus throne, radiating petals enclosing the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, and a square palace enclosure with four gates surrounded by a circular band of lotuses and a ring of multicolored flames, all filled with numerous auspicious objects.

From top to bottom, her left arms bear the Prajnaparamita sutra, rice stems, and a kalasha; and her right arms are holding prayer beads and a staff, and the lowest held in varada mudra. The background is dotted with Buddha, teachers, and bodhisattvas seated within individual shrines accompanied by devotees and monks, all set within a verdant landscape with lush green grass on rolling hills. The upper margin with Samantabhadra in union with his consort, flanked by White Tara and Green Tara, above a triad comprising Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) flanked by Amitabha and Vairocana.

Inscription: To the lower margin. The first line and several characters of the second are in Sanskrit, and are verses in praise of the goddess Vasudhara. Then the inscription continues in Newari: ‘On Wednesday, the seventh of the dark half of Pousa, during the citra naksatra and the dhriti yoga, during the Jathakarna muhurtra, when the sun was in [Cancer] and the moon in Virgo, in the year NS 982 [corresponding to 1862], on this day [this] paubha of the mandala of Vasudhara was made and placed. The donor is Harsha narasimha Sikhirikara of Rajakirtti Mahavihara in the great city of Kantipuri in the Nepala mandala, his son Heravira Simha, these two, while sojourning on the Northern road, beyond the great Brahmaputra River, while, as the avatars of Sihara Sarthabahu, doing business in the magical seat of Lhasa, at that time righteous thoughts arose in their mind [the Dharma thought arose], and in the name of their mother Dhijara Chimi, on this auspicious day they made and had consecrated this Vasudhara mandala. May it be good.’

Provenance: Ian Alsop, Peaceful Wind, Santa Fe, United States, 12 October 1995 (invoice lost, information according to family tradition). A private collection in Maryland, United States, acquired from the above and thence by descent. Ian Alsop (1947-2020) was a distinguished scholar, dealer, and passionate advocate for the arts and cultures of the Himalayas. Having settled in Nepal in the early 1970s, he became deeply immersed in Newar language and artistic traditions, contributing to important manuscript-preservation and lexicographical projects. Following extensive travels throughout Nepal and Tibet, he founded the Peaceful Wind Gallery in Santa Fe in 1989. He was also the founder and editor of Asianart.com, a pioneering scholarly resource that has played an influential role in the study and appreciation of Himalayan art.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, light creasing with associated flaking and minute losses to pigments, minor soiling. The mounting is in good condition with expected wear, signs of use, small losses mostly to the back, minor loose threads.

Dimensions: Image size 66.5 x 42.5 cm, Size incl. mounting 135 x 74 cm

The painting is mounted as a hanging scroll with a silk brocade frame richly woven with an embroidered patch of a sinuous dragon above crashing waves and amidst clouds.

Standing at the center of this mandala is the golden image of Vasudhara (‘stream of gems’), a Buddhist goddess of wealth and abundance especially popular in Nepal, who also embodies the pursuit of learning and the totality of Mahayana ideology as symbolized by the Perfection of Wisdom sutra that she holds in her upraised left hand.
