A DENSATIL GILT-BRONZE CARYATID STRUT, CENTRAL TIBET, EARLY 15TH CENTURY

Published: Himalayan Art Resources, item number 24574, listed in the thematic sets group “Tibet: Densatil (Struts & Plaques)”

Finely cast in the round with two four-armed deities standing back to back, each elegantly modeled with a serene expression, wearing long flowing dhotis and adorned with necklaces, earrings, and other jewelry. Their principal hands are held in graceful gestures and carry attributes, including a water vessel and a long sash, while the raised secondary arms hold a large open lotus blossom supporting the capital. Above rises a massive two-tiered square support, completing the strut’s architectural function.

Provenance: The private collection of Mark Walberg, Pennsylvania, United States. The stand with an old collector’s number, ‘4027’. Mark Walberg is a distinguished dealer and collector of Asian art, whose career spans more than half a century. He began collecting at the age of thirteen and, over the ensuing fifty-five years, established an international reputation through his work with major auction houses, as well as through consulting and appraisal services for some of the most respected figures in the field. Renowned for his expertise in Japanese and Chinese art, Mark has handled and sold thousands of objects, developing a highly refined understanding of the market and a discerning connoisseur’s eye. His distinguished collection was formerly housed in a historic mansion in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, previously the residence of the state’s first senator, William Maclay.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, obvious losses, light rubbing to the gilt, small dents, few minute cracks to the top.

Weight: 828 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 17.6 cm (excl. stand), 22.5 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on a modern wood stand. (2)

Gilt bronze supports of this type are characteristic of Densatil, a Kagyu monastic complex in central Tibet, southeast of Lhasa, which has long been considered one of the great treasures of Tibet. Founded in the late 12th century, it enjoyed generous patronage and was lavishly decorated during a period of expansion from circa 1360 until the early 16th century. The monastery was known for eight extraordinary memorial stupas symbolizing Buddha's first teaching in Benares. These stupas were called tashi gomang, meaning ‘many doors of auspiciousness,’ and were multi-tiered copper-alloy structures filled with deities, standing more than ten feet tall and resplendent with inlays of semiprecious stones. Prior to the destruction of Densatil during China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1978), eight of them dating between 1208 and 1432 stood in the monastery’s main hall.

The present strut served as a decorative support for one of Densatil’s tashi gomang stupas. Around 64 such caryatid struts adorned each stupa, positioned between the fifth and second tiers. Stylistically, the present example closely resembles struts attributed by Jean-Luc Estournel to the tashi gomangs made in 1407 and 1408. These are distinguished by their capitals enveloped by large open lotus blossoms. See Jean-Luc Estournel, “About the 18 Stupas and Other Treasures Once at the Densatil Monastery,” asianart.com, 2020, figs. 230 and 250.
