A VERY LARGE (123 x 107 CM) THANGKA OF TSONGKHAPA, TIBET, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

Distemper and gold on cloth. Finely painted, depicting Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school, seated in dhyanasana atop a multicolored lotus throne, his hands held before the chest in dharmachakramudra and clutching lotus stems which come to bloom at the shoulders and support his principal attributes, the sword of wisdom and the sutra. He is clad in richly patterned monastic robes and wears the distinctive yellow pandita hat, his serene face framed by a circular halo and a large radiating aureole.

The central figure is flanked by his two principal students, Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438), and surrounded by an extensive lineage of teachers and deities seated upon cloud banks, three of the lamas with identifying inscriptions. Amitabha appears above, while protective deities occupy the lower register, including Vaishravana, Mahakala, and Palden Lhamo, all rendered amid swirling flames and billowing clouds. The composition is further enriched with offerings, lotus blossoms, architectural elements, and mountainous landscapes, the whole executed in a vibrant palette dominated by red, blue, green, and gold.

Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) is the founder of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism, the "newest" of the extant schools. Tsongkhapa studied the traditions of the Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyü, and particularly Kadam lineages, and codified certain principles of all of them in the Gelug tradition. Today, the order is the most popularly followed in Tibet, with its head, the Dalai Lama, seen as the spiritual leader of the country.
