? A PAINTED IVORY APPLIQUé GROUP OF TWO BOYS, 18TH CENTURY

Published: Feng-Chun Ma, A Thousand Years of a Hundred Boys in Chinese Art, CA Book Publishing, Hong Kong, 2024, p. 197, no. 79.

China. Finely carved as two boys dressed in loose robes tied at the waist with a sash, the pleads falling elegantly around the arms and legs, each holding an implement, their round faces with downcast eyes, gentle smile, framed by a pair of double-knot pigtails. The surface is decorated in red, blue, and black pigments.

Provenance: The Feng-Chun Ma Collection, Netherlands. The reverse with a label from the Feng-Chun Ma collection and from Rainbow Art & Framing Works, Beijing. Feng-Chun Ma is a distinguished scholar, collector, and dealer of Chinese art with more than thirty-five years of experience. Born in the Netherlands to Chinese parents, she was influenced early on by her father’s efforts to promote Chinese culture in Europe. Her professional career in the Asian art world began in 1982 at Christie’s Amsterdam, after which she served as Head of the Chinese and Japanese Department at Sotheby’s Amsterdam, before establishing her own dealership, Feng-Chun Ma Chinese & Japanese Art, in 2003. Over the course of her career, she has assembled a renowned private collection centered on the motif of “boys at play” (yingxitu), comprising rare and well-provenanced works ranging from Song dynasty ceramics to Ming and Qing porcelain, jade, bronzes, snuff bottles, and textiles, reflecting both her scholarly insight and connoisseurship. In 2015, her son Paul Ruitenbeek joined her in the business, and they worked together until 2019, when he established his own firm under his own name. Together, they participated in the PAN Amsterdam Art Fair in 2017 and 2018.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, fine age cracks, few losses and chips, and remnants of ancient pigments.

Expert’s note: Figurative appliqués of this type were carved in various material and originally fixed to screens. Finely carved examples such as the present one represent the height of the carver’s art in the 18th century. Comparable examples are known from the Summer Palace, where carved screens and panels in relief were employed as wall decoration in the interiors of various imperial residences. Few examples, however, have survived as independent works of art.

Literature comparison:
Compare a group of ivory figures, dated 18th-early 19th century, 10-16.5 cm tall, illustrated in Chinese ivories from the Shang to the Qing, The Oriental Ceramic Society and the British Museum, 1984, p. 148-149, no. 165-168.
