A RARE CARVED BAMBOO TRIPOD VESSEL, DING, 18TH CENTURY

Expert’s note
The present lot belongs to a rare group of earlier Qing dynasty bamboo carvings that reinterpret ancient bronze forms. During the Qing dynasty, particularly under the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors, the revival and imitation of archaic bronzes became a major artistic trend, reflecting the court’s fascination with antiquity, scholarship, and historical continuity. This archaistic taste extended across media, inspiring the creation of porcelain, lacquer, jade, bamboo, and other works that consciously reproduced the forms and decoration of Shang and Zhou ritual vessels. The present incense burner faithfully follows the shape of an ancient ding, one of the most important bronze ritual vessels of ancient China.

China. Finely carved with deep rounded sides supported on three cabriole legs and set at the everted rim with a pair of loop handles, carved around the body in low relief with a double keyfret band, the legs with ruyi strapwork.

The base with a two-character seal mark.
