拍品描述 翻译
Tang Dynasty Female Drummer-TL tested, Tang (618-907 A. ZD.). H 35.5 cm (14 in.). This exceptionally well-preserved Tang dynasty pottery figure depicts a female musician playing a drum. The survival of its original colors is particularly remarkable. The brilliant red of the long skirt dominates the composition, establishing a festive tone appropriate to music, performance, and celebration, while traces of red and other pigments remain visible on the upper garment and face. The costume itself is unusually engaging. A short-sleeved outer garment is worn over a long-sleeved robe, creating a layered silhouette around the shoulders and arms. This arrangement does more than record Tang dress: the succession of short sleeve, long sleeve, forearm, and hand directs the eye downward toward the performance. Most striking is the treatment of the drum. Rather than resting on a visible support, it is positioned horizontally before the musician’s body, giving the curious impression that it floats in the air. The sculptor thereby removes almost everything that might distract from the relationship between musician, hands, and instrument. The true focus of the composition is consequently not the drum itself, but the two hands poised at either side of it. Their placement creates an implied sequence of movement—as one hand strikes, the other prepares to answer. Although the figure is silent and motionless, the gesture is so clearly conceived that one can almost hear the alternating beat of the drum. The vivid red skirt, layered costume, suspended instrument, and carefully positioned hands work together to transform a static funerary figure into an image of performance. Created for the afterlife, the musician nevertheless preserves something intensely alive: the rhythm and celebratory atmosphere of Tang life itself. Tang dynasty (618–907), painted pottery. Thermoluminescence tested by Laboratory Kotalla, Report No. 14PR8062022. Provenance: Formerly in a UK private collection, acquired in Hong Kong in the early 1990s. Literature: Published in Guardians of the Afterlife, p. 23.Preview from Oct. 19th to 23rd from 1:00 PM TO 5:00 PM Eastern Time, Location: 15229 Display Court, Rockville, MD 20850.
