拍品描述 翻译
This present pair of carved huali 'official's hat' yoke-back armchairs known as sichutou guanmaoyi, each with a curved splat back surmounted by a yoke-shaped arch and further flanked by the rear posts which continue to form the back legs extending through the rectangular frame of the woven seat, the arm rails supported on slender standing stiles and extending in a curved manner beyond the front posts, the rectangular framed enclosing the mat seat above the humpback stretcher set with vertical struts, the four legs joined by stepped strepped stretchers and a shaped foot rest to the front, below plain aprons and spandrels Size:(107.5cm high, 57cm wide, 45cm deep) Qty: (2) Provenance: From the esteemed collection of Ulrich Hausmann, (Germany, 1947-2023); and thence by descent: Ulrich Hausmann was highly regarded as a distinguished collector and scholar of Chinese works of art, and was particularly renowned for his expertise in the field of later Chinese bronzes. Hausmann assembled an important collection in this regard and contributed significantly to the scholarly field and understanding of later Chinese bronzes. Notes: Please refer to a pair of chairs closely related sold at Christie's, New York, 16 March 2015, lot 3294; another pair of chairs but without arms sold at Bonhams, London, 15 May 2014, lot 349; another pair was offered at Sotheby's, New York, 18-19 March 2025, lot 267 These splendid pair of huali chairs are characterised by its exceptionally clean lines and restrained elegance, this rare and sophisticated form embodies many of the most highly sort after characteristics of late Ming furniture which was also highly admired into the Qing period. This type of chairs is known among Chinese furniture connoisseurs as a sichutou guanmaoyi (‘four-ends-extended’ ‘official’s hat’ armchair), a name derived from the projection of the crestrail and armrests beyond the rear and front posts, respectively. Although these extended elements likely originated in more vernacular traditions of Chinese furniture, by the Ming and into the Qing dynasty the form had become fully assimilated into the refined taste of the literati. The broad sweep of the extended crestrail, in particular, conveyed distinction and status, and chairs of this type were often reserved for the most senior figures at a gathering.
