Ingeniously designed to combine function and aesthetics, this type of box would have graced the Emperor's studios, placed alongside stationery and various scholarly items. See a closely related carved cinnabar lacquer square four-tier box and cover with stand, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no.guqi000070). Other carved cinnabar lacquer boxes of irregular form and with stand are in the Qing Court Collection, at the Palace Museum, Beijing, including a carved cinnabar lacquer chime-shaped box and cover carved with Immortals on the cover, Mid-Qing dynasty, and a carved cinnabar lacquer plum-blossom shaped box and cover with stand, Mid-Qing dynasty, also carved with Immortals, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, pp.58-61, nos.39-40.The large wan symbol on the cover of the present lot, which denotes the number ten thousand and symbolises myriad blessings, is unusual. A related application of a magnified wan decorated with a diaper pattern can be seen on a cinnabar lacquer square box, mid-Qing dynasty, in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in In a Myriad of Forms: The Ancient Chinese Lacquers, Shanghai, 2018, p.160, no.105. See also a pair of carved cinnabar lacquer boxes and covers with a large wan-character in the centre formed with twisted rope, Qianlong, illustrated by J.Ayers, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, vol.III, London, 2020, p.859, no.1974-1975. See also a carved cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover with a large fu ('good fortune'), Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, Palace Museum Beijing (acc.no.gu00225289). The bat, amid the swirling cloud pattern carved on the cover, displays an impressive three-dimensional effect and is characteristic of lacquerware produced during the Qianlong period, designed to cater to the aesthetic preferences of the Emperor. The bats together with the wan character form the rebus wan fu ('ten thousand blessings'). See two examples with their covers decorated with distinctive swirling clouds, Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colors: Treasured Lacquerware in the Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, p.130, nos.125-126. See also a cinnabar lacquer charger, Qianlong, carved with comparable bat and cloud pattern, illustrated in Ibid., p.142, no.145. J.Ayers,《Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen》,卷3,倫敦,2020年,頁859,編號1974–1975。
