A CARVED BLACK LACQUER 'LONGEVITY BIRD' RECTANGULAR TRAY Ming DynastyOf rectangular section, the shallow rising sides divided from the well by a shaped panel, the border carved with butterflies at the corners amidst flower-heads and scrolling leaves, the central well decorated with four birds, including a sparrow, a magpie and two pheasants with long trailing tail feathers, their plumage meticulously incised, set amidst a dense ground of blossoming prunus and craggy rockwork, all carved through thick layers of black lacquer to an orange-red ground, box. 38.2cm (15in) long. (2). 3174The remarkable carving on the present tray reflects a tradition already established in Song-dynasty lacquerware. The long, narrow rectangular form is traditionally identified as a handscroll tray, while its bird-and-flower decoration belongs to an enduring pictorial tradition that flourished in Song dynasty painting and continued to be translated into the decorative arts throughout the Yuan and Ming periods. Compare with three carved black lacquer oblong trays with paired birds and flowers, Northern Song dynasty, illustrated in Chinese Lacquerware: An Odyssey of Connoisseurship, Tokyo, 2015, nos.1-3. See a related carved cinnabar lacquer rectangular tray with peonies and long-tailed birds, Yuan dynasty, 14th century, illustrated in Karamono: Imported Lacquerwork - Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan (Okinawa): Selections from the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya, 1997, no.19. The long-tailed bird (shoudai niao 綬帶鳥), also known as the 'bird of longevity' (shoudai niao 壽帶鳥), is distinguished by its lustrous head, neck and crest and its gracefully elongated tail feathers. Its name invokes the shoudai (綬帶), the ceremonial sash associated with official rank, while the homophonous shou (壽) signifies longevity. The bird therefore carries auspicious connotations of advancement in official rank and longevity, expressing wishes for both worldly success and a long life. The butterflies carved among the foliage in the corners add a further auspicious dimension: the butterfly (hudie 蝴蝶) was traditionally associated with longevity and enduring happiness, in part through the homophonic association of die (蝶) with die (耋), referring to an advanced age. Together, the shoudai niao and butterflies create a felicitous combination of official advancement, longevity and happiness.See also a carved black lacquer square dish with a pair of long-tailed birds flying amid camellias against a red background, first half of the 14th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc.no.2015.500.1.5); and a carved black lacquer over red-ground bowl with phoenix amidst peony, late Ming dynasty, illustrated in The Muwen Tang Collection Series: Chinese Lacquer, vol.20, Hong Kong, 2010, no.66.A related black lacquer rectangular tray, Ming dynasty, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2007, lot 1556. 另見一件元代十四世紀剔紅長方盤,飾牡丹及綬帶鳥,載於《Karamono: Imported Lacquerwork - Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan (Okinawa): Selections from the Tokugawa Art Museum》,名古屋,1997年,編號19。
