Published and Illustrated:Zhang Rong, ed., The Creation of Natural Immensity and Grandeur: The Yang Ming Shan Fang Collection of Lacquer from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Beijing, 2020, pp.76-77, no.19出版著錄:張榮主編,《巧法造化:陽明山房藏宋元明清漆器》,北京,2020年,頁76至77,編號19The distinctive pommel-scroll pattern found in tixi lacquer, known as jianhuan wen (劍環紋) in Chinese and guri in Japanese, derives its name from the resemblance of its characteristic interlocking scrolls to the ring-shaped pommel of an early Chinese sword. The pattern enjoyed sustained popularity from the Song dynasty through to the late Ming dynasty. A Yuan dynasty example, attributed to the esteemed lacquer artist Zhang Cheng, is in the Qing Court Collection, Palace Museum, Beijing (acc.no.Gu00108708). Another circular tixi lacquer dish, Song/Yuan dynasty, is illustrated in Dragon and Phoenix: Chinese Lacquer Ware, the Lee Family Collection, Tokyo, Cologne, 1990, no.7. See a Mid-Ming dynasty example, illustrated in Ibid., no.12, Compare with a slightly larger 16th-century example with three similarly arranged registers of pommel scrolls, which was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 27 November 2014, lot 147. See also a related large tixi black lacquer dish with four registers of pommel scrolls, from the Lee Family Collection, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2012, lot 2094.
