A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER 'SCHOLARS UNDER PINE' SQUARE DISH Mid-Ming DynastyOf square form supported on a shallow foot, finely carved in the centre with two scholars, one holding a closed parasol, leisurely strolling below a gnarled pine tree towards a pavilion in which a third scholar awaits seated, surrounded by a quatrefoil panel on each of the flaring sides crisply carved with floral and foliate sprays, the exterior further carved with sprays, the base lacquered black, Japanese wood box. 22cm (8 5/8in) x 22cm (8 5/8in) (2). Published and Illustrated: Zhang Rong, ed., The Creation of Natural Immensity and Grandeur: The Yang Ming Shan Fang Collection of Lacquer from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Beijing, 2020, pp.74-75, no.18出版著錄:張榮主編,《巧法造化:陽明山房藏宋元明清漆器》,北京,2020年,頁74至75,編號18Compare with a square cinnabar lacquer dish, but with buffalos at pasture, mid-Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, pp.130–131, no.97. The theme of scholars visiting or gathering with friends, accompanied by attendants amid terraced gardens and pavilions, can also be seen on a square dish of the Yongle period, illustrated in Ibid., no.33, and another square dish, also of the Yongle period, no.39. Such scenes evoke the cultivated ideal of scholarly friendship and leisurely retreat, in which the meeting of like-minded companions provides an occasion for conversation and appreciation of the natural surroundings. Compare also the depiction of a scholar beside a pavilion beneath a pine tree on a circular cinnabar lacquer box and cover, Xuande six-character mark and of the period, illustrated in Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colors: Treasured Lacquerware in the Palace Museum, Taipei, 1998, p.49, no.29.
