A VERY RARE CLOISONNé-ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE 'CHILONG' BOTTLE VASE Jingtai incised six-character mark and of the periodFinely cast of elegant pear-shape rising from a stepped gilt-bronze foot incised with classic lotus scroll to a tall narrow neck surmounting the bulbous body terminating with a gilt-bronze galleried mouth rim, the body exquisitely enamelled with meandering lotus scrolls with large blooms in red, white, yellow, and blue enamels, applied with a crisply cast archaistic chilong coiling around the body and neck with jaws agape and single curved horn extending down the sinewy body with long flowing mane, notched spine and bifurcated, foliate tail. 15.2cm (6in) high. The present vase is an exceptionally rare example of early Ming cloisonné enamel, with an incised six-character Jingtai mark and exhibiting a number of features traditionally associated with the finest cloisonné enamels of the mid-fifteenth century. The elegant pear-shaped body is richly decorated with scrolling lotus blossoms reserved against a luminous turquoise-blue ground, while a finely cast gilt-bronze chilong ascends the shoulder and neck. The harmonious integration of cloisonné enamel and gilt-bronze mounts reflects the sophisticated craftsmanship achieved by the Imperial workshops during one of the most important phases in the development of Chinese cloisonné enamels.Particularly noteworthy is the restrained enamel palette, dominated by shades of blue, white, red, yellow and green, characteristic of early Ming cloisonné production. The cloisons are relatively broad and confidently executed, creating a vigorous decorative effect associated with fifteenth-century works. Equally significant are the substantial gilt-bronze mounts, including the engraved collar and foot rim, whose robust construction and rich gilding compare favourably with other early Ming Imperial cloisonné vessels preserved in museum collections. The engraved lotus-scroll decoration on the foot and neck collars may be compared with that on a cloisonné-enamel incense burner of the early Ming dynasty in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 1: Cloisonné in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Beijing, 2011, pp.110-111, no.39.The sculptural chilong further supports an early date. Powerfully modelled and cast in the round, it possesses the dynamism associated with early Ming decorative arts. The creature's elongated body, flowing mane and bifurcated tail are integrated seamlessly into the form of the vessel. Such elaborate gilt-bronze embellishments are found on a small group of highly important Imperial cloisonné vessels traditionally attributed to the early Ming period. Compare, for example, a closely related cloisonné enamel vase with gilt-bronze chilong handles and an incised Jingtai mark, early Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in ibid., pp.82-83, no.18.The present vase may also be compared with a related cloisonné enamel and gilt-bronze chilong bottle vase, mid-Ming dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 1: Cloisonné in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Beijing, 2011, pp.146–147, no.63. The treatment of the gilt-bronze chilong likewise recalls that on another cloisonné enamel vase, mid-Ming dynasty, in the same collection, illustrated ibid., no.69. Taken together, the robust gilt-bronze mounts, broad cloisons, restrained enamel palette and powerful sculptural treatment, make the present vase a rare surviving example of Jingtai mark and period cloisonné.See a cloisonné enamel and gilt-copper alloy alms bowl, Jingtai six-character mark and of the period, which was sold at Bonhams Paris, 11 June 2024, lot 9.
