A PAIR OF SUPERB RARE CHAMPLEVé ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE 'LUDUAN' INCENSE BURNERS, COVERS AND STANDS QianlongEach meticulously cast as a rotund mythical beast densely decorated with florets and flames, with a large bell suspended from the neck above a stripe of pink enamelled scales to the chest, the covers formed with flowing manes surrounding open mouths with exposed fangs, the eyes of inlaid cabouchon stones, with pricked ears and a long curling horn, all standing foursquare atop a hexagonal waisted stand above foliate feet with lotus lappets and further classic lotus-scrolls chased on the top surface. 34.5 cm (13 2/4in) and 35.4cm (14in) high. She was first married to Gerald Legge, 9th Earl of Dartmouth, and in 1976 married John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, becoming stepmother to Lady Diana Spencer, later Princess of Wales. Known for her literary connections, wit, and distinctive style, she was a notable collector and patron of the arts, maintaining a prominent presence in British high society throughout her life.Compare with a similar pair of cloisonné enamel luduan, Qianlong, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 3: Cloisonné in Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, p.57, no.24. The survival of the present pair with their original cloisonné enamel stands is particularly noteworthy. Purpose-made stands of this type were integral to the presentation of Imperial cloisonné enamel figures, elevating the beasts within the ceremonial and architectural setting for which they were intended; however, they are frequently separated from the figures over time. The preservation of the complete ensembles therefore enhances their rarity and provides important evidence for the original display and function of such objects at the Qing Court. See a pair of cloisonné enamel incense burners in the form of mythical beasts, on wood stands, in the Hall of Mental Cultivation in the Forbidden City, illustrated in Life in the Forbidden City of Qing Dynasty: Classics of the Forbidden City, Beijing, 2007, p.48.Luduan (甪端) refers to a late Imperial category of auspicious horned beast rather than to a single, fixed creature of early mythology. Its appearance and attributes draw selectively upon a range of earlier Chinese traditions, incorporating features associated with auspicious and protective animals. In the Ming and Qing periods, the luduan became particularly associated with Imperial and ceremonial settings, where it was employed both as an incense burner and as a monumental guardian figure. As an incense burner, with fragrant smoke issuing from the open mouth, the creature acquired an especially animated presence, its vapour suggesting breath or vital energy (qi) and reinforcing its role as an alert and vigilant guardian. Such imagery was particularly appropriate within the highly ordered ceremonial environment of the Qing imperial palace, where auspicious beasts served simultaneously decorative, protective and symbolic functions.See a related Imperial cloisonné enamel incense burner in the form of a luduan, incised with a Qianlong six-character mark and of the period, sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 May 2023, lot 846.
