THE PROPERTY OF A LADY A RARE SANCAI-GLAZED AND APPLIQUé-DECORATED 'POLO PLAYERS' TRIPOD VESSEL AND COVER Tang DynastyOf robust compressed globular form, supported on three stylised animal feet and surmounted by a short, waisted neck with a grooved rim, the bulbous body decorated in high relief with appliqués, including a horizontal band of florets around the shoulder and dynamic polo players below, lavishly covered in rich amber, green, and straw lead glazes, the cover similarly decorated, fitted box. 20cm (7 7/8in) high. (3). Tripod sancai vessels featuring applied relief decoration are among the most technologically complex and prestigious earthenwares produced during the High Tang period. The technique of press-moulding clay reliefs reflects the profound influence of Sasanian silverware and Silk Road trade on Tang ceramic design. The striking white-spotted resist pattern was achieved through careful wax-resist application prior to glazing, allowing the underlying buff clay body to create a vivid visual rhythm against the lustrous amber and green lead glazes. Such vessels were strictly reserved for high-ranking aristocratic burials in the imperial capitals of Luoyang and Chang'an, serving as prominent displays of status, wealth, and cosmopolitan taste.See a related sancai-glazed tripod vessel, but smaller in size and decorated to the body with horse appliqués, Tang dynasty, excavated from Yongcheng, Henan Province, in the Henan Museum, illustrated in Huangye tangsancai yao, Gongyi, 2000, pl.4:1. See also a smaller sancai jar and cover decorated with floral roundels to the body, Tang dynasty, from the Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, which was sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 1999, lot 252, and again on 25 September 2020, lot 1802.
