PROPERTY FROM A HONG KONG PRIVATE COLLECTION A FLAMBé-GLAZED VASE, FANGHU Qianlong seal mark and of the periodThe pear-shaped body of rectangular section rising from a gently spreading foot to a quatrefoil rim, the waisted neck set with a pair of square tubular handles, the front and back belly each moulded with a raised peach-form panel, overall covered in a rich purple-red transmutation glaze streaked with mottled blue, thinning to a light beige colour at the rim and along the edges, the base incised with a six-character seal mark and further applied with a greyish glaze with russet flecks, fitted box. 30.5cm (12in) high. (2). 335The inspiration for the flambé glaze can be attributed to the splashed Jun wares of the Song dynasty. However, this specific red glaze, created from copper with additional lead content, was notably unstable and challenging to regulate within the kiln environment, leading to the highest failure rate among all Chinese glazes. It was only through the development of advanced technical proficiency during the Qing period, particularly during the Qianlong reign, that successful production of flambé-glazed porcelain was achieved, thereby emphasising the exceptional quality and rarity of the present lot.A number of examples of this type of vase are in museum and private collections: one in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Chinese Pottery and Porcelain, vol.II, London, 1915, pl.23, fig.1. See also a flambé-glazed hu in the Tsui Museum of Art, illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art: Chinese Ceramics IV: Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, no.47. Compare a very similar vase in the Huaihaitang collection, Qianlong seal mark and period, illustrated in Ethereal Elegance: Porcelain Vases of the Imperial Qing, Hong Kong, 2007, no.78.Compare a similar flambé-glazed fanghu-form vase, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, which was sold at Christie's New York, 21 September 2023, lot 877. See also a flambé-glazed rectangular pear-shaped vase, which was sold at Bonhams London, 18 May 2023, lot 144.
