Provenance:An American private collection, Salem, Massachusetts, 1975Christie's New York, 22 March 2013, lot 1533Known in Chinese as rendong ('enduring winter'), honeysuckle is a hardy climbing vine that retains its verdancy through the cold season. First introduced to China from Central Asia alongside Buddhism during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the honeysuckle scroll was widely used in early cave-temple decoration to represent resilience, spiritual purity, and perpetual vitality. By the Qing dynasty, this ancient motif was seamlessly adapted into Court porcelain decoration, where its original Buddhist connotations evolved into refined wishes for longevity and continuous blessing. The combination of archaistic floral medallion compositions and soft, painterly underglaze blue brushwork echoes the prised Chenghua (1465–1487) prototypes that Yongzheng so admired and frequently commanded the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen to emulate. See a related Chenghua blue and white bowl, in the Palace Museum, Taipei, included in The Special Exhibition of Ch'eng-hua Porcelain Ware, Taipei, 2003, cat.no.27.Compare a closely related Yongzheng mark and period blue and white bowl, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 October 2001, lot 810. See also a smaller blue and white bowl painted with similar motifs to the exterior, Yongzheng mark and of the period, which was sold at Christie's New York, 17 September 2015, lot 2232.
