See also a wucai garlic-head vase, Wanli mark and of the period, from the Avery Brundage collection, in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, acc.no.B60P56. Compare also a related wucai 'dragon and phoenix' garlic-head vase, Wanli mark and of the period, from the collection of the Chang Foundation, illustrated in Selected Chinese Ceramics from Han to Qing Dynasties, Chang Foundation, Taipei, 1990, pl.109, which was later sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 November 2016, lot 3397. See also a wucai 'dragon and phoenix' garlic-head vase, Wanli six-character mark and of the period, which was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 April 2010, lot 1865. Wucai porcelains of the Wanli period (1573–1620) represent one of the most resplendent achievements of Ming Imperial ceramic production, distinguished by their vibrant palettes, intricate compositions, and luxurious visual appeal. Among the most celebrated forms are garlic-mouthed vases (suantouping), whose iconic silhouette adapts archaic bronze prototypes into a refined ceramic vessel. These surfaces served as ideal canvases for imperial artisans, who enlivened them with brilliantly painted polychrome designs combining underglaze cobalt blue with vivid overglaze enamels. The pairing of the dragon and phoenix — symbolising the Emperor and Empress respectively — represents cosmic harmony (yin and yang) and wishes for marital bliss and imperial stability. Achieving such a complex decorative scheme required a perilous two-stage firing process: first firing the high-temperature underglaze cobalt blue, followed by the delicate application and low-temperature enamel firing of the iron-red, green, and yellow overglaze pigments.
