Description: Lacquered wood with mother of pearl and silver inlays Korea, 15th – 16th centuries in the Joseon Dynasty The mother of pearl inlays on this early Choson Dynasty lacquered wooden box are all neatly incised and form the image of two confronted dragons facing off on either side of a flaming jewel with a backdrop of scalloped clouds, on the lid and all four sides. These mythical scenes are framed by floral inlaid borders and thin silver borders all around. Inside the box is a tray which can be taken out, lacquered in red same as the interior and the underside of the lid. The exterior shows a chocolate brown lacquer coating.
